A broadband internet connection – also known as high speed internet – is defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as data transmission speeds that exceed 200 kilobits per second (Kbps) in at least one direction: either upstream, that is from the consumer’s computer to the internet or downstream, which is from the internet to the consumer’s computer.

Methods for Delivering Broadband Internet

There are currently five common methods for delivering broadband internet connections to the consumer, including:

Broadband Internet – DSL Technology

DSL broadband connections deliver high speed internet connections via the existing telephone network. However, unlike a dial-up connection, a DSL connection allows the consumer to be on the phone and online, using the same line, at the same time.

Broadband Internet – Cable

A cable broadband internet connection is delivered through the cable television network infrastructure. Cable, along with DSL, are the two most common forms of residential broadband internet connectivity at present.

Broadband Internet – Wireless

A wireless broadband internet connection means that the consumer is not limited by needing to be physically connected to a telephone line or a cable. Instead, the high speed connection is delivered by a special wireless router which converts the data into radio waves.

Broadband Internet – Satellite

Satellite broadband internet connections are especially popular in rural communities; areas commonly underserved – or not served at all – by DSL, cable, or wireless internet service providers.

Broadband Internet – Fiber-Optic Cable

A fiber-optic cable broadband internet connection is the fastest means of connecting the consumer to the internet. However, this technology is still in limited availability. Those with access to a fiber-optic cable network, though, can expect fast-as-light broadband internet connections.
