A
broadband speed test – also called a high speed internet speed test – measures a broadband connection to determine how fast it is operating. It is good for the consumer to know if their broadband connection is functioning at a high level, because slower-than-expected results could indicate problems, including problems with the
internet service provider (ISP).
Reasons for Slow Broadband Speed Test Results
There are several possible reasons that a consumer’s broadband speed test returns results significantly slower than expected, including:
- Malware, including spyware and computer viruses
- Hardware problems
- Software issues
- Multiple connections with limited broadband access
- Problems with the ISP
All of these problems are reasons for the consumer to be concerned; thankfully, most are correctable. However, the consumer needs to first be aware that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Testing Broadband Speeds
Broadband internet service providers usually offer different transmission speeds, with the uploading being slower than the downloading. Uploading, or upstreaming, is moving data from the consumer’s computer to the internet whereas downloading, or downstreaming, is moving data from the internet to the consumer’s computer. Therefore, it is normal that a broadband speed test shows different results for upload and download rates.
