A cable internet connection is one method for providing high speed or broadband internet access to consumers. Typically, high speed cable internet connections are delivered by the same cable company that provides cable television to the consumer. A cable internet connection requires some special equipment and has both advantages and disadvantages over other form of high speed internet.
Equipment
For a cable internet connection, the consumer needs to have access to a cable network TV outlet – this is the same cable connection that one would use to connect their TV to the cable television network. The cable is connected to a cable modem – either leased from the internet provider or purchased by the consumer – which connects to the user’s computer. Some consumers may choose to have the cable modem connect to a special wireless router, in order to create a local wireless hot spot.
Advantages of Cable Internet
There are many advantages to a high speed cable internet connection; among them are:
- The connection is always on
- Connections are reliable and affordable
- Distance between your computer and the cable internet provider does not affect speed, unlike what happens with a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection
- Most homes and apartments have cable connections already installed
- The phone line is not tied-up as happens with a dial-up connection
- The connection is much faster than with dial-up
Some Disadvantages
There are also a few disadvantages to a broadband cable internet connection, such as:
- Cable connections are shared with your neighbors on your network segment, sometimes causing a reduction in connection download and upload speeds
- Cable internet connections are not always available
- Because the connections are shared, a firewall needs to be installed to protect the user’s privacy.
