Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the best internet deals in the Bay Area?

For great deals on internet in San Francisco, we recommend Race Broadband’s basic internet plan ($25 per month), the starter package from Xfinity ($29.99 per month), or the phone and internet bundle from Sonic ($40 per month). If you want something beyond the basics, but still affordable, AT&T’s 100 Mbps fiber plan is also a great deal ($50 per month).  For great deals on other speeds, check out our recommendations at the top of the page.

Is gigabit internet available in San Francisco?

If you’re looking for gigabit internet in the Bay, you’re in luck. There are several providers that offer fiber internet in San Francisco with speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (1 gigabit), including Xfinity, AT&T, and Raw Bandwidth. For the best price on blazing fast internet, check out Xfinity’s gigabit package, which is priced lower than other providers.

Are there any Bay Area internet providers that don’t require a contract?

Xfinity has several contract-free internet plans in the Bay Area. You will pay about $10 more per month than if you have a 12-month contract. But if you think you might move within the year, it’ll pay off to avoid an Early Termination Fee (ETF). Raw Bandwidth also offers month-to-month internet plans.

If you’re looking for a contract-free ISP (Internet Service Provider) in the Bay Area, steer clear of AT&T, Suddenlink, Race, Viasat, and Sonic. They all require you to sign at least a 12-month contract. Cancelling service early could result in an Early Termination Fee, which can cost you somewhere around $20 per month for each month remaining on your contract.

What are good internet speeds for myself and a couple roommates?

If you’re sharing internet with a few roommates, good internet speeds could be anywhere from 20 Mbps to 400 Mbps, depending on how you use the internet and how often you’re home. There’s no reason to pay more for speed you don’t need, but not having enough speed is frustrating. Take video streaming and gaming into special consideration since they require the most speed.

How do I measure my internet speed to see if my provider really delivers the speed I need?

Does it seem like your internet is always slower than you need it to be? You can easily measure internet speeds with our “<a href=

Are there any alternatives to Comcast internet in San Francisco that offer comparable speeds?

Yes, you can find alternatives to Comcast internet in San Francisco with AT&T or Raw Bandwidth. Xfinity by Comcast has less-than-stellar customer service ratings, so that drives many to seek alternatives.

If you don’t need the fastest gigabit plan, Race Communications is a local internet provider that offers highly rated fiber internet in the Bay Area. Race offers speeds up to 100 Mbps, which isn’t gigabit but it’s still lightning fast.

What’s the lowest-priced internet in the Bay?

Your best bet for the lowest-priced internet in San Francisco is going to be a slower speed broadband connection. These plans are good for those who don’t need blazing fast gigabit speeds (or the price tag to go along with it). Xfinity’s starter plan is $29.99 per month for 15 Mbps. In some neighborhoods, you can get basic broadband internet from Race Communications at $25 per month for 25 Mbps, which is a better deal, although it’s not available everywhere. You can also check out the basic plans from Sonic, Xfinity, or Suddenlink for low-priced internet in the Bay Area.

San Francisco Residential Internet Coverage

San Francisco is one of the largest cities in California, and as a result, numerous national and local internet companies have extensive networks in this area.

One option to consider is AT&T, which offers DSL and fiber service throughout San Francisco. The DSL network covers all of San Francisco, reaching as far west as Outer Sunset, as far north as North Beach, as far east as Potrero Hill, and as far south as Crocker Amazon. The fiber network is considerably smaller, although it is still in development.

Both Xfinity and Sonic.net bring coverage to almost all of San Francisco, with Sonic.net stopping short of the west coast in Lakeshore.

Through Raw Bandwidth Telecom, a few eastern neighborhoods enjoy access to high-speed internet. This company serves South of Market and Potrero Hill.

The New Edge Networks service area is slightly larger, reaching Lakeshore in the southwest, Bernal Heights and Inner Richmond in central San Francisco, and the northern neighborhood of Marina.

Most areas southeast of the financial district have coverage through Astound Broadband. South of Market and Mission are both in the service area of Race Communications, as well.

Service has frequent hiccups (out for 5-60 seconds a couple times a day) which can disrupt connections. Price increased from $49.99 to $87.61 (+75%!) without notice.

Service stability is not what it used to be with somewhat more frequent downtimes. Substantial cost increase in part due to mandatory voice service fees, even if we don't use them. Download speed is generally good

Gigabit fiber is always fast (up and down) and low-latency — never the evening slowdowns I used to get with cable. It has very good uptime - has gone down well under once per year. Price is good, and they don't try to upsell you or sell your information to advertisers. What is not to like?
