DSL technology works using the phone lines that come into residences. The technology divides the telephone line into two frequencies: the high-frequencies are used for transmitting internet information, such as data, voice, and video, whereas the low-frequencies are used to transmit telephone information, such as incoming and outgoing telephone calls. With DSL connections, in contrast to dial-up internet access, which also uses the telephone infrastructure, the consumer can be both making and receiving phone calls and be surfing the internet, simultaneously.
As is usual with most internet connections, there is a difference in speed between the
upstream or uploading transmissions – that is, from the consumer’s computer to the internet and the downstream of downloading of transmissions – that is from the internet to the consumer’s computer. Usually, the connection is faster for downloading and slower for uploading.
