HughesNet vs. StarBand Comparison

As the demand for high speed internet access grows, so too does the demand for high speed internet connectivity in rural and remote communities. Most often, the best option for those in rural areas is high speed satellite internet. Two of the current satellite internet service providers (ISPs) are HughesNet and StarBand. While each requires the consumer to install – or to have professionally installed – a satellite dish and related equipment, there are some significant differences in the services that they offer.
 
HughesNet
  • Offers six connection plans and speeds to choose from.
  • Includes five to ten free email accounts, depending on which plan is selected.
  • Upload speeds ranging from 128 kilobits per second (Kbps) to a maximum of 300 Kbps.
  • Download speeds ranging from 1.0 megabits per second (Mbps) to a maximum of 5.0 Mbps.
  • Offers service throughout the 48 contiguous states.
  • A certified installer is required to connect and activate the equipment.
 
StarBand
  • Offers three connection speeds and plans to choose from.
  • Includes five to fifteen free email accounts, depending on which plan is selected.
  • Upload speeds ranging from 100 Kbps to a maximum of 256 Kbps.
  • Download speeds ranging from 500 Kbps to a maximum of 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps).
  • Offers service throughout the all of the 50 United States, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • A certified installer is required to connect and activate the equipment.
