NetZero offers high speed internet connections via dial-up service, which utilizes the existing telephone networking infrastructure. The customer will need to have a dedicated telephone line to use to dial into the NetZero connection, along with a telephone modem. If the user does not have a dedicated phone line, then they can use their regular phone line; however, the user will not be able to be on-line and using the telephone for receiving and making calls at the same time – unlike a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection.
At this time, NetZero advertises itself as offering the fastest dial-up service available, using a proprietary program that accelerates dial-up web surfing. As is true with most internet connections, the upload or upstream speeds – that is, data being sent from the user’s computer to the internet – are slower than the download or downstream speeds – the data being sent from the internet to the user’s computer.
While the NetZero connections speeds are not as fast as cable, DSL, or fiber-optic high speed internet access, being limited by the 56 Kb modem, for the basic web user who simply wants to send email and browse the internet, the speeds from NetZero are acceptable.
Currently, NetZero offers two plans for the consumer: the Unlimited plan and the Accelerated plan.
Both of these plans offers unlimited web surfing, email with virus and spam protection, web space for personal website or blog, nationwide access, and thousands of access numbers, as well as being instant messenger compatible. The Unlimited plan offer 1,000 megabits of email storage and the Accelerated plan offers 2,000 megabits of storage for email. Additionally, the Accelerated plan comes with a pop-up blocker and Norton AntiVirus, included.
