Broadband From PeoplePC
PeoplePC offers consumers high speed internet connections using the existing telephone networking infrastructure and dial-up service. The consumer will need to either have a dedicated or regular phone line for their connection, and home telephone line service, as well as a telephone modem, which can be purchased or leased. If the consumer does not have a dedicated phone line, they will not be able to use their phone line to make and receive calls while also being on the internet, unlike high speed internet consumers who have a digital subscriber line (DSL) internet connection.
PeoplePC offers a specialized accelerator technology that speeds-up the consumer’s page load times – the speed at which a page downloads or becomes visible to on the consumer’s computer – by simplifying and compressing the web pages. This technology can affect the quality of the graphics on the page. However, the text is usually resolved fairly fast. The PeoplePC accelerator also works with web-based email programs, accelerating the graphics and text in emails, though not in email attachments.
As is true with most internet connections, regardless of the internet service provider’s (ISPs) technology, the upload or upstream connection speed – the speed at which data travels from the user’s computer to the internet – is slower than the download or downstream connection speed – the speed at which data travels from the internet to the user’s computer. Also, speeds are limited by the standard 56 kilobits per second (Kbps) modem. However, for basic email and web surfing, a dial-up connection through PeoplePC is acceptable.
