Cincinnati Bell offers consumers digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet access in Ohio (OH), Indiana (IN), and Kentucky (KY). The company uses its existing telephone line infrastructure to provide consumers with access to broadband Internet.
DSL technology works using the phone lines that come into residences. The technology divides the telephone line into two frequencies: the high-frequencies are used for transmitting Internet information, such as data, voice, and video, whereas the low-frequencies are used to transmit telephone information, such as incoming and outgoing telephone calls. With DSL connections, in contrast to dial-up Internet access, which also uses the telephone infrastructure, the consumer can be both making and receiving phone calls and be surfing the Internet, simultaneously.
As is usual with most Internet connections, there is a difference in speed between the upstream or uploading transmissions – that is, from the consumer's computer to the Internet and the downstream of downloading of transmissions – that is from the Internet to the consumer's computer. Usually, the connection is faster for downloading and slower for uploading.
Cincinnati Bell High Speed Internet Pricing Tiers
Cincinnati Bell currently offers two pricing and connectivity tiers from which the consumer can choose, based on the consumer's needs.
ZoomTown High-Speed Internet Lite – This tier offers download speeds up to 768 kilobits per second (Kbps) and upload speeds up to 384 Kbps, perfect for email users and occasional web surfing.
ZoomTown Advantage – This tier offers download speeds as fast as 5.0 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds up to 768 Kbps. Included in this tier is 25 gigabits (GB) of on-line storage for backing-up data.
Cincinnati Bell High Speed Dial-Up Internet Access
Cincinnati Bell also offers consumers the option of connecting to the Internet via dial-up. With this service included is anti-spam and anti-virus protection, an 800-number for dialing into when traveling, five email accounts, a pop-up ad blocker, and Cincinnati Bell's Internet accelerator software. The accelerator software speeds-up the downloading of certain elements of web pages, allowing for a faster experience for the user.
