Windstream Communications specializes in providing high speed Internet access to rural areas via DSL (digital subscriber line) technology. Currently, Windstream is an Internet service provider (ISP) in 18 states, offering broadband connectivity throughout the southeast, the Midwest, and New York and Pennsylvania.
Like other DSL providers, high speed Internet is provided via the existing telephone line infrastructure. The phone line is divided into two bands – the lower frequencies are used to transmit voice communications, such as a normal phone call, and the higher frequencies are used to transmit data, voice, and video to the Internet. With DSL, the same phone line can be used simultaneously for a telephone conversation and surfing the Internet.
Windstream offers three different tiers pricing and connectivity plans for high speed Internet. Each level comes with professional installation, a free modem or wireless router (after rebate), and one month of a security suite that includes anti-virus software. As is usual with today's Internet connections, uploading or upstream speed (from the consumer's computer to the Internet) is slower than downloading or downstream speeds (from the Internet to the consumer's computer).
Windstream Communications Pricing and Connectivity Tiers
3 Mbps – Perfect for the basic user who wants to send email and surf the Internet; top download speed is 3 megabits per second (Mbps) and top upload speed is 768 kilobits per second (Kbps)
6 Mbps – This tier works well for home networking and connectivity, offering a maximum downloading speed of 6 Mbps, with maximum uploading speed of 768 Kbps.
12 Mbps – The top tier from Windstream, connectivity is as high as 12 Mbps., perfect for Internet gaming or viewing live video, and upstreaming maximum speed is 768 Kbps.
Windstream Dial-Up
In addition to the DSL high speed Internet connections, Windstream also offers dial-up service in either a 15-hours per month rate or unlimited monthly connections.
