What is T1 Line Internet Access?

A T1 Line is a fiber optic or copper telephone line that has been designed for multiple users. T1 Lines can handle as many as 24 digital voice channels / conversations at one time. For high speed internet purposes, the T1 Line can handle about 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps) of data transmission. T1 Lines are also known as digital signal 1 (DS1 or DS-1).

How a T1 Line Works

While normal telephone lines carry voice data as an analog signal, the T1 Line carries data as a digital signal. A T1 Line functions much like a regular telephone line and, if being used for phone conversations, can be plugged directly into an office’s telephone system. If the T1 Line is being used for high speed internet access, the line connects with a network router or modem in the office, which handles all of the data, voice, and video information being transmitted to and from the internet. The other end of the T1 Line terminates at an internet service provider (ISP).

For many businesses, T1 – or the more advanced T3 – Lines provide reliable high speed internet access for multiple users at one time. Because the T1 Line can also be used for telephone connections, many companies choose to bundle their telephone and high speed internet service together.

T1 Lines can be expensive and are not usually practical for the home internet consumer.
