What is the best internet provider in Houston?

Several major internet companies offer gigabit internet speeds (1,000 Mbps or faster) in the Houston area, including AT&T, Xfinity, Spectrum, and EarthLink. Local Houston providers like Tachus have invested in fiber networks capable of gigabit speeds for parts of the city but are not as widely available as major providers yet.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in Houston

AT&T, Xfinity, EarthLink, and Spectrum internet services top the list in the customer reviews we receive on our site, and all four of those providers offer their highly rated services in Houston.

Our annual customer satisfaction survey shows that EarthLink received the highest rating among nationwide providers in overall satisfaction in 2022 with a 4.0 score, followed by a close race between Spectrum in third place, AT&T in fourth place, and Xfinity in fifth. Frontier ranked near the bottom in 11th place.

T-Mobile was also included in our survey this year and actually earned a higher overall customer satisfaction score than the bigger nationwide providers with its 5G home internet.

Smaller Houston internet providers, like Tachus, offer fast fiber internet service in limited areas, but most of them haven’t received enough customer reviews for a reliable rating.

The best internet for gaming in Houston is going to be a fiber connection, whether that’s with AT&T or another fiber provider in your neighborhood. Fiber usually offers faster upload speeds than cable or DSL, which means you’ll have lower latency (ping rate) and faster response time.

Fastest internet service providers in Houston

Hotwire Communications is the fastest with its advertised speeds of 10 gigs. AT&T, EarthLink, and Frontier are tied for second-fastest internet providers in Houston with still ridiculously fast 5 gig fiber plans. Windstream comes next with its fiber internet plans. Most other fiber providers come in around the standard 1 Gbps fiber plan. Although 1 gig doesn’t sound as impressive when compared to Hotwire Communications, AT&T, Frontier, and Earthlink’s 5 gig plan, it’s still more speed than most households use—even if every device in the home streams at once, so I wouldn’t sweat it if these fiber providers are not in your neighborhood.

Houston residential internet coverage

Houston residents have several broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP) options, but AT&T and Xfinity serve the most areas. Although some ISPs offer service in more areas of Houston than others, no wired ISP services the entire city.

For example, Spectrum offers internet service in the Spring area, but Xfinity is the main cable internet provider to downtown Houston. Similarly, people living in the Baytown or League City areas can get internet service from Frontier, but AT&T would be the main fiber or DSL internet provider for most of Houston. CenturyLink also offers service in some Houston neighborhoods and surrounding areas.

If you live outside the Texas 8 Beltway (the Sam Houston Parkway), you might be outside the service area of all the ISPs mentioned above. If this is you, don’t worry. You can still get high-quality internet service through a satellite internet provider like Viasat or Hughesnet.

Most internet providers offer TV service, phone service, and bundling options to keep your costs down. Some even offer mobile phone plans. To see which ISPs offer service in your corner of Houston, use the map below.

Houston internet FAQ

What’s the best cable internet service provider (ISP) in Houston?

Xfinity covers the largest area in Houston and gives customers a lot of plan options. As far as pricing goes, we think Spectrum offers the best value for your dollar. Cable internet providers in Houston include Xfinity, Spectrum, Astound Broadband, and Optimum.

How many internet service providers are there in Houston?

There are more than a dozen internet providers in the Houston area, although they aren’t all available in every neighborhood. Most Houstonians have at least four or five internet companies to choose from.

AT&T and Xfinity cover the largest areas, but CenturyLink, Frontier, Spectrum, and Windstream also provide service to select Houston neighborhoods and surrounding areas.

Speeds and availability will vary by location, so enter your ZIP code to see what’s available in your neighborhood.

What’s the best internet for gaming in Houston?

The best internet for gaming in Houston is with either AT&T fiber or with another fiber provider. Most online games don’t actually require a fast download speed, but they do need low latency to keep the game from lagging. Fiber offers reliable, low-latency connections that don't have to deal with the kinds of slowdown you might get in cable or DSL.

Why does my internet speed fluctuate so much in Houston?

Internet speeds fluctuate in Houston because internet connections everywhere function similar to a highway. For example, if you’re driving during rush hour, you might hit some traffic and slow down. Similarly, you’ll get different speeds at different times of the day, depending on usage in your neighborhood. Cable is more prone to slowing during high-traffic periods than fiber is.
