What Apple has Up Their Sleeve
by Ben Kerns | Mar 23, 2015 | Technology | 0
Apple has steadily become one of the major players in developing Internet-related technology over the years. The tech giant continues to dominate the field with the iPhone and is set to release a new smart watch next month. We thought it’d be fun to take a look at what else is on the horizon over at Apple.
An Electric Car
Apple is looking get in on the automobile industry. Rumors have been circulating for awhile about the company’s intent to begin manufacturing a line of electric cars
, but so far Apple hasn’t confirmed anything.
Vans registered to Apple have been driving around New York City and San Francisco loaded with sensors, cameras, and other equipment. Engineers familiar with self-driving cars have speculated Apple might be looking to develop their own. Others believe the company might be looking to partner with an existing manufacturer after they held a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk
If the car functions like most Apple products, it’ll come with Internet connectivity that will have built in GPS, communication, and the ability to use apps. How great would it be to tell Siri to take the wheel while you enjoy the scenery? You could theoretically use the car’s Internet capabilities and smart features to tell Siri to open or close your doors and windows, turn the air or, hopefully, parallel park itself. There are quite a few people who need that last one.
Expect more news to leak on this throughout the year.
Tim Cook recently announced all major car manufacturers are now on board to deliver vehicles with Apple’s CarPlay installed
. In case you’re unfamiliar with the software, it allows a connected iPhone to take over the dashboard display and give users access to iOS 8 apps, maps, audio services, messages, and phone functions. In doing so, it also blocks out apps that are likely to distract you while driving.
The idea is to make it safer for drivers to use typical phone functions, like texting and calling, along with GPS, through voice-activated signals and easy touch-screens instead of fumbling with a phone. Apple plans to roll out CarPlay to over 40 different car models by the end of 2015.
A New Apple TV
Two years have passed since Apple gave us any update to the Apple TV and speculation has swirled that may finally happen by the end of this year. The company recently announced HBO Now service will be available and there are even rumors that Apple is developing an actual TV
rather than just another TV set top box.
The top box available now provides wireless connectivity to shows and movies through the Internet onto your television. The new TV might do the same, just without need of the box and on an Apple TV of its own rather than streaming through another brands’ TV.
There were previously rumors of a motion detecting remote control, but we aren’t sure if that’s still in the works.
The earliest we’ll probably see anything come of this is 2016.
The iPhone 7
It seems silly to think Apple would launch another iPhone so soon seeing how the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus just came out, but rumor has it the company is considering releasing two iPhones a year here on out. That would place the iPhone 7 for a date sometime this year.
MacWorld is speculating the iPhone 7 will likely come with a new iOS 9 platform
which might contain functions like split-screens and group FaceTime calls.
There’s no concrete information about what updates the new phone would include, but speculations range from wireless charging capabilities to making it waterproof.
Apple is notorious for trying to keep their game plans a secret for as long as possible, so it’s difficult to be certain as to what is currently being developed and what isn’t. For now, these five items are a safe bet and should be on the horizon soon. Personally, hooking up to the Internet through a car sounds like it could certainly make for an interesting ride!
