Our Wisper Internet review

Wisper Internet is a small regional provider that serves much of Missouri, as well as parts of the surrounding states. Wisper offers fixed wireless internet connections, which allow coverage in remote locations that lack communications infrastructure while offering higher speeds than many other wireless technologies. It’s also started offering fiber connections in (very) limited areas.

Wisper offers plans with a wide range of speeds, from incredibly slow to reasonably fast. For those in areas with limited internet options, Wisper is a welcome alternative with options to fit almost any household.

 Pros

Wisper Internet speeds

Wisper offers a wide range of speeds, from its Surf Basic plan at just 5Mbps (which is below the threshold to be considered broadband) to its Surf Max plan that’s fast enough to handle multiple people streaming 4K video at the same time.

We don’t recommend Wisper’s plans that aren’t capable of reaching broadband speeds unless you only use your internet for the most basic online tasks and are confident that you won’t need it for anything else. For most households, speeds above 100Mbps are enough for any online activity you might need, but it’s a good idea to know exactly how much speed you need so you don’t overpay for your internet service.

Wisper has also started offering fiber connections in limited areas, which gives you even higher speeds and better value if it’s available in your area.

Wisper data caps

Wisper doesn’t have data caps, and we think that’s great. High speeds aren’t that appealing if they burn through your data allowance that much faster—but with unlimited data, you can take full advantage of the speeds you pay for.

Our favorite plan: Surf Ultra 200Mbps. This plan gives enough speed for even the most demanding online tasks, like streaming 4K video. It’s also available throughout Wisper’s coverage area, making it available even in more remote locations.

If you’re fortunate enough to live in an area where Wisper currently offers fiber service, you can get the same high speeds that its wireless customers enjoy at a much lower cost, along with the reliability and other advantages of fiber. Wisper also offers a gigabit fiber connection, for those who want the fastest internet speeds the provider offers.

Wisper is transparent with its fees, which is refreshing. Although there are a lot of ways to nickel-and-dime you to death, there are no surprises or hidden fees, so you can avoid many of these fees.

Wisper Internet installation, equipment, and contracts

Installing fixed wireless can be daunting, as it requires a rather large antenna to be mounted to your home. Fortunately, Wisper has a lot of mounting options so you can find a solution you’re happy with.

Wisper installation and equipment

Wisper, like most fixed wireless and satellite internet plans, starts with a big upfront cost for your antenna installation. The base installation fee includes several mounting options, though Wisper also provides other options for additional cost, like mounting the antenna on a freestanding pole instead of your house.

Wisper Internet contracts

Wisper doesn’t force you into any long-term contracts, which we appreciate. Contracts usually come with hefty termination fees that can back you into a bad situation if you need to leave. Contracts are also common among satellite and fixed wireless providers. Wisper trusts its quality of service to keep customers around, rather than the threat of fees, and that really sets the provider apart.

Wisper vs. the competition

Rise Broadband 25–50Mbps$25.00–$65.00/mo.†View Rise Broadband Plans
Starlink 50–250Mbps$110.00/mo.‡View Starlink Plans

Wisper offers higher speeds than even cutting-edge satellite services like Starlink can offer. It also surpasses many other fixed wireless providers. The biggest difference between Wisper and the competition, however, is its simplicity and flexibility. You never have to worry about speed throttling or overage charges on your bill. You can switch to a new provider any time you want without having to worry about the financial repercussions. Except for the pricing variations between locations (which makes comparing providers much more difficult than it has to be), Wisper is about as straightforward a choice as you can get.

Is Wisper Internet right for you?

Wisper is a good, straightforward option for rural areas. Its wireless plans offer high speeds at a competitive price, while eliminating the contracts, hidden fees, and data caps that rural options often suffer from. Wisper offers speeds fast enough to work from home or binge watch your favorite Netflix series. And you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing there won’t be any surprises on your monthly bill.

FAQ about Wisper

What is fixed wireless and how does Wisper internet work?

Fixed wireless internet uses a radio antenna, usually mounted on the roof of your home, that points to a nearby wireless tower, which is connected to the rest of the internet. That tower beams information in a straight line to your antenna, which is then connected by cable to a router inside your home.

Does Wisper offer unlimited data?

Yes,  Wisper has no data caps, no overage charges, and no throttling of your connection, so you can use your internet connection as much as you want.

Can I stream movies and video content over my Wisper connection?

Yes. Most Wisper plans can deliver enough speed to stream video, including 4K video. Most streaming services require speeds of around 25Mbps for 4K resolution, which you can get with most Wisper plans. Streaming video uses large amounts of data, so the unlimited data means you can stream as much as you want.

Methodology

Our HighSpeedInternet.com editorial team bases our analyses on customer input from our annual customer satisfaction survey, results from our speed test tool, and proprietary internet provider data on speeds and pricing. To strengthen our research, we look closely at provider contracts to get hard-to-find information on price hikes, data caps, and extra fees, and we keep tabs on the latest news reports and online reviews. When applicable, we also rely on our personal experiences testing these services.
