Is Reddit Down?

How to troubleshoot a Reddit outage and get back online

Having trouble accessing Reddit? It’s easy to find out if Reddit is experiencing an outage, but spoiler alert: it’s probably not. At the time of writing, the platform has experienced a single partial outage in the past 90 days. Reddit maintains a real-time performance tracker that you can check to see if the site is experiencing issues.

As a daily (sometimes hourly) Redditor, I’ve had a few instances where I couldn’t access Reddit, and the causes have usually been external: VPNs, internet service issues, phone issues, etc. It’s more likely there’s an issue with your Reddit account, browser, internet connection, or your device. But I built this guide so you don’t need to guess. Let’s get to the bottom of it and get you back into your favorite Reddit rooms.

Check for a Reddit outage

Most folks might check crowd-sourced outage sites, like Downdetector, but this can often result in a false positive for big sites like Reddit. The most reliable way to check for a Reddit outage is to check Reddit’s status page.

This gives you an immediate yes-or-no answer in seconds. Reddit’s status page is a transparent log of the site’s performance over time. If there’s a large-scale outage, chances are it will be represented here.

The Reddit Status pages track Reddit’s performance in four categories: Reddit’s overall status, Reddit’s infrastructure status, media storage, and its ads. What you’re most likely looking for is an overall or infrastructure outage, which would indicate a problem with the underlying servers that support Reddit.

Here’s how you interpret the Reddit status page:

Step 1: Go to https://www.redditstatus.com.

Step 2: Look at the overall system status at the top of the page. You’ll see one of four status updates.

All Systems Operational: Reddit is likely not down overall.

Partial Outage / Major Outage / Degraded Performance: Reddit is experiencing issues.

Step 3: Look at the subsections: ads, infrastructure, and media storage. These label issues use the same terminology as the overall system status indicator.

Operational: This subsection is likely not down.

Partial Outage / Major Outage / Degraded Performance: This subsection of Reddit is experiencing issues.

Like any external site or service, if Reddit or one of its subsections is experiencing an outage, you’ll have to wait for the problem to be resolved.

Troubleshoot Reddit

If Reddit isn’t having an outage, but you’re still not able to access it, there are a few more things you can try.

  • Log out of your Reddit account and try again.
  • Access Reddit from a different internet browser.
  • Access Reddit from a different device.
  • Turn off any VPNs you’re running.

If these tips don’t help, it’s likely you’re experiencing a problem with your internet or Wi-Fi connection instead.

Check your internet connection

It’s possible your internet connection is experiencing slowdowns or even an outage. Reddit may be working perfectly, but loading very slowly or not at all due to an issue with your internet connection, like a provider slowdown or even an outage.

Your best first step is to run a quick speed test. A speed test provides you with a bunch of useful info (like download speed and ping) along with verification that your connection is indeed working.

If you don’t get results at all, you’re either experiencing an internet outage or there’s something wrong with your home network. If you get results but they’re slower than what you’re paying for, check out our tips to improve your connection.

Upgrade your internet plan

Internet platforms like Reddit get more demanding every day, particularly due to the prominence of videos. Not too long ago, a 100–200Mbps plan was plenty of bandwidth for the average household, but today, the same residence might experience a serious bottleneck with the same bandwidth.

Thankfully, it’s easy to find a better deal on internet service, and customers have more options than ever with new technologies, like 5G home internet. Plug your zip code into the search below and see if there’s a better internet plan in your future.
