What Is Starlink’s Demand Surcharge?

Find out why customers in some areas could pay up to $1,500 extra

Starlink‘s demand surcharge is a one-time fee of up to $1,500 for new residential customers, current customers activating new equipment, or customers switching addresses—but only if the service plan is in a high-demand area.

Starlink’s fee was first introduced a few years back as a $100 one-time “congestion charge” in areas where network capacity was limited. But now that Starlink’s customer base has grown substantially, the fee targets customers who access its service in highly congested areas.

Let’s get into how Starlink’s demand surcharge can skyrocket the initial costs for some customers.

How much is Starlink’s demand surcharge?

Starlink’s one-time demand surcharge fee ranges from $100 up to $1,500. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where there is no demand surcharge, you might even see free equipment rentals or other offers. But for those that live in areas where network capacity is reaching its limit, you probably won’t see very many deals since Starlink is already trying to mitigate capacity with the demand surcharge.

Currently, there are five tiers to Starlink’s demand surcharge fee. Here are the five different surcharge fees you could be hit with:

  • $100
  • $250
  • $500
  • $750
  • $1,500

Starlink’s demand surcharges are based on network capacity and regional demand, but they are also dynamic and could change at any time. The demand surcharge also varies depending on the plan you select, so if you see a charge on one plan, check the others too.

Can you order a plan with no demand surcharge, then transfer service to an address?

Starlink’s service plans and equipment can be transferred to new locations, but you can’t get around the demand surcharge by transferring service from a location without a fee. If you transfer service from a location with no fee, you’ll still need to pay the demand surcharge fee at the new address if there is one.

If you change your service address between two locations with demand surcharge fees, you will get a prorated surcharge fee if the new address has a higher fee. You’ll get a credit for what you previously paid for and will only have to pay the difference.

Starlink’s Roam plans are also subject to the demand surcharge fees, so you can’t get around the fee by signing up for a Roam plan either.

If you switch Starlink plans, will there be another demand surcharge?

You can be hit with a demand surcharge if you switch to a plan that has one at your location at the time you sign up. Surcharge fees are applied based on network capacity and demand at the time you sign up, so you can’t get past the surcharge fee by signing up for a plan that doesn’t carry a fee and then switch to a plan that does.  If demand for a specific plan or Starlink services increase in your area, you will need to pay any demand surcharge the plan you are switching to carries.

Does Starlink’s 30-day money-back guarantee apply to demand surcharges?

If you aren’t satisfied with your Starlink service and have buyer’s remorse, you can get a full refund on your service plan and any demand surcharge fees. Starlink’s fees are no joke, and dropping thousands of dollars just to get service is a big commitment, but as long as you start a return within the 30-day window, you’ll be able to get a full refund.

Is paying Starlink’s demand surcharge worth it?

Starlink’s demand surcharge can be very pricey for some customers, but it can still be a worthwhile investment for a reliable connection. Once you decide if Starlink will be a beneficial investment for you, the next step is figuring out how much it’ll cost. Starlink’s dynamic pricing structure can make it hard to figure out exactly how much Starlink’s service will cost at your address. The varying demand surcharge exacerbates this and can create a $1,500 difference in what some customers end up paying. But if you have no other high-speed internet options in your area, Starlink can be a great long-term investment for customers who need a stable connection with fast speeds and low latency.
