Why is my Mercury Broadband internet speed slower than advertised?

Like most internet providers, Mercury Broadband advertises the maximum speed the internet connection is capable of, but that’s not necessarily the speeds you will experience consistently. This is especially true of wireless internet, which deals with a lot of issues that wired connections don’t have to worry about, such as weather and physical obstructions.

About our Mercury Broadband internet speed test

The Mercury Broadband internet speed measures three things:

Download speed: The speed at which your device pulls data from the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

Upload speed: The speed at which your device sends data to the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

Latency (Ping): The time (measured in milliseconds) it takes for a signal to travel from your device to an internet server and back. Lower latency means your connection has a better response time for activities like gaming and livestreams.

How does the Mercury Broadband internet speed test work?

Our speed test connects to a nearby server and sends test data over this connection. By looking at how long it takes for different files to travel over your connection, the test can analyze it. The idea is to measure the speed of your home’s internet connection, but if you’re connecting to the test over your Wi-Fi network, the test will be measuring the data traveling across both your home connection and through your router and home Wi-Fi, which can give a different result. It’s a good idea to physically plug your device into your router before running a speed test to get the best results.
