Is Gmail Down?

How to troubleshoot a Gmail outage and get back online

Email trouble? There’s nothing worse than wondering if your email provider is having technical difficulties or if your internet isn’t working properly. Let’s ask the big question and work our way down to the likely root of the problem. Is Gmail down? The likelihood of Gmail not working is really low. Our best guess is that it’s not.

The Alphabet email service has been around since April 2004 and has had about five quick outages to date. That’s a good enough track record to seriously consider that the problem you’re experiencing is something else.

If it’s not Gmail, what is it? Here are the steps to troubleshoot and check on your email, internet, and home setup so this problem doesn’t happen again. Let’s get started—it will be painless, I promise!

How to troubleshoot Gmail

Is Gmail actually down, or is it something else that’s preventing you from getting to your daily mail? The good news is that you can check this out on your own in less than a couple of minutes. Let’s dig into how to check if the email provider is experiencing issues or not, and what to do next.

Check Google’s Workplace Dashboard for outage info

Google’s official Workplace Dashboard is a free tool that tracks all Google products in real time so you don’t ever have to wonder if any of their services are lagging or experiencing an outage. Upon clicking over to the tool, you will immediately be able to see if Gmail is down or not.

If there’s a green checkmark next to its name on the list, your email provider is online and good to go. If there’s a red X next to it, Google is, in fact, having issues with Gmail.

If Gmail is down, all you can do is wait. Looking at its track record, though, you probably won’t need to wait long.

No outage? Try these steps next

Once you’ve identified that Gmail is not down, Google suggests a few other steps to diagnose what’s wrong.

  1. Try another browser: There is life outside of Safari, but it may be wise to see if your email works on another program just in case.
  2. Try another device: Your laptop may be on the fritz, so use your phone or tablet for another gauge on the issue.
  3. Check your connection: Find your router and make sure it’s connected, plugged in, and operational.

Check your internet connection

Let’s face it: Gmail probably isn’t down. Your devices are more than likely working well. Your router is functioning just fine. Still looking for answers? Let’s look at the root of the problem: Your internet connection!
