How to troubleshoot a League of Legends outage and get back to gaming

As one of the world’s most competitive multiplayer games, your League of Legends experience is completely dependent on the quality of your connection to the Riot servers. Unfortunately, games as big as League are going to have inevitable outages from time to time. The good news is that Riot Games knows how important prompt communication is with its seriously competitive League player base.

If you still can’t find evidence of an outage or maintenance on the League of Legends servers, then it’s time to start looking for a more local issue, like a home networking problem or an ISP outage. We’ll show you how to access each solution and get you back to front with your fellow Champions in no time.

How to troubleshoot a League of Legends outage

Thankfully, finding out if you’re experiencing a League of Legends outage is fast and easy. Riot Games maintains a detailed server status page that can provide answers when you’re experiencing issues. Riot also posts vital server updates to its socials. We’ve provided the links and details to each solution below.

The only downside is that there’s nothing you can do except wait it out if you’re experiencing an outage or scheduled maintenance.

Check the Riot Games server status page

Riot Games maintains a reliable server status page for its multiplayer games. This should be your first stop when running into connection issues with League.

Step 1: Navigate to the Riot Games Service Status Page.

Step 2: Select your region.

Step 3: Click on League of Legends.

Step 4 (what to look for): A red or yellow warning icon or a critical-labeled message signals an unexpected service issue with the servers, while blue icons may notify of planned maintenance. The status details are important, so be sure to read the description. Green checkmarks mean things are in working order. In the example above, Riot will intentionally shut down servers for approximately four hours in preparation for a new patch.

Look for outage reports on social media

Sometimes it may take a bit for an issue to be officially recognized on the Riot status page, in which case you should head over to social media to get live updates from the official Riot Support channels or run a broad search for League outage reports.

  • Check the official @RiotSupport Riot routinely posts about unexpected outages, login errors, extended maintenance windows, or disabled features (like when Clash mode or Ranked queues get temporarily turned off).
  • Search keywords like “League down” or “League of Legends servers” on X and filter by latest. If thousands of players just got booted, you’ll see an immediate flood of reports and probably a lot of memes and angry tweets.
  • Search the League of Legends Reddit hubs. During major outages, the mods typically pin a thread to the top of the page. Check r/leagueoflegends and r/LoLTechSupport.

Learn if others are experiencing issues

If you still haven’t found the info you need and you’re sure there’s an issue, check a third-party down detection site’s League of Legends page. Outage tracking pages can tell you how many people have reported a League of Legends outage in the last 24 hours. This is helpful, but also prone to false positives and negatives. Pay close attention to the actual numbers represented. A game as big as League of Legends is likely to have a consistent baseline of a few users reporting issues at all times. Don’t get me wrong! Down detectors are useful tools, but take the data with a grain of salt.

Check your internet connection

The Riot servers might be running perfectly fine, but loading very slowly or not at all due to an issue with your internet connection, like a provider slowdown or even an outage.

Your best first step is to run a quick speed test. A speed test provides you with a bunch of useful info (like download speed and ping) along with verification that your connection is indeed working.

If you don’t get results at all, you’re either experiencing an internet outage or there’s something wrong with your home network. If you get results but they’re slower than what you’re paying for, check out our tips to improve your connection.
