Xfinity’s offers a variety of high-value plans that provide a lot of internet speed for the money. And as a cable ISP, its services are generally fast and reliable. The downside is that Xfinity charges all the usual extra fees, like equipment rental and early termination fees, and maintains the typical ISP policy annoyances, like data caps and price hikes. While, these fees and policies aren’t exactly budget-friendly, you’re likely to encounter them with other ISPs, as well.

Xfinity internet: My favorite plan
For the average household, the 500 Mbps plan delivers the most bang for your buck. At $55 per month, it finds a good balance between speed and price. In the age of gigabit plans, 500Mbps may not seem as impressive a speed as it once did, but even by modern usage standards, it’s a lot of bandwidth.

The 500 Mbps plan will provide plenty of speed for most households. Larger families and heavy internet users could consider the 1 Gig internet plan. It provides 1,000Mbps of internet speed, which is more than enough internet speed for just about anyone.
Those with tighter budgets can take a closer look at the 300 Mbps plan, though they will have to contact Xfinity for accurate pricing.
Xfinity’s high-tier 1.2 Gig and 2 Gig plans only make sense if you have the most extreme bandwidth needs. Think households with eight or more people or those who frequently need to download huge amounts of data.

Xfinity internet: Data caps
Yes, Xfinity internet plans have a 1.2 TB data cap—plenty of data for the average customer. But if you do go over, Xinifty gives customers a pass for the first data overage. After that, you get hit with a $10 fee for every 50 GB over your cap, up to a maximum of $100 a month.
There are two ways you can get unlimited data with an Xfinity internet plan:
- You can sign up for xFi Complete for an extra $25 per month. It also includes an upgraded Xfinity gateway (modem/router) rental.
- You can add unlimited data to any Xfinity internet plan for $30 per month.

Xfinity’s installation fee is generally $100, though that is subject to change based on region. If you’re on a budget, opt for a self-install to save on upfront fees. The equipment rental and other fees are standard for cable internet providers. Xfinity provides a decent amount of data, but there is a $10 overage fee if you surpass the monthly limit.
Xfinity internet: Installation, equipment, and contracts
At $100, Xfinity’s install fee is something you want to try to avoid by opting to self-install. Xfinity’s equipment is pretty good, and it has some attractive offers and features that make renting equipment tempting. Regarding contracts, most Xfinity plans do not require a term contract. But keep in mind that promo pricing ends after 12 months.
Xfinity installation
For $100, Xfinity sends a technician to your residence to connect your home to its network and set up your equipment. If your residence already has an active Xfinity internet connection, you can just self-install for free.
Self-installation with Xfinity is easy. All you need to do is connect your equipment to power and connect an active coaxial cable to the back of the modem. From there, the Xfinity app walks you through the rest of the process.
Xfinity equipment
Most new Xfinity customers who decide to rent their equipment will get an XFi internet gateway, a modem/router combo that runs on the DOCSIS 3.1. protocol. The XB-8 has tri-band Wi-Fi, four Ethernet ports, and advanced security. It also integrates well with the Xfinity App’s control and troubleshooting features.
Xfinity bundles its equipment rental and unlimited data feature with the xFi complete add-on, which costs $25 a month on top of your regular rates.
Xfinity contracts
Xfinity internet plans don’t require a contract. With no term contracts required, you won’t have to worry about early termination fees.

Fiber is both faster and more reliable than cable internet, and comes with the benefit of symmetrical speeds (faster upload speed compared to cable).
