Spectrum Gig for Gamers

Get both the bandwidth and the low latency you need

An unreliable internet connection is frustrating at any time, but especially in the middle of an online game. With big titles like Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, now is a great time to upgrade to a faster, more reliable internet connection.

Among nationwide internet providers, Spectrum has perhaps been the one most focused on the needs of gamers. So we’re going to take a closer look at Spectrum’s gigabit internet plans and how they impact your gaming experience.

Online games need low latency

When most people think about the speed of their internet connection, they focus on bandwidth or download speed. However, unless you’re using a game streaming service like PlayStation Plus Premium or NVIDIA GeForce NOW, most online games require very little bandwidth.

The most important stat for playing games online is latency, which is the time it takes for information to travel from your device to a remote server and back. Higher latency will increase the amount of lag you experience while playing and could even get you booted from the game if it gets high enough.

In general, wired connections like fiber give you the lowest latency connections, while wireless connections add a lot more latency, which can become a problem when playing games.

In early 2026, Spectrum began implementing the L4S protocol (an IETF network protocol for Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput) in parts of its network. While lower latency gives all internet users a smoother experience online, it’s especially important for online gaming to give players more responsive controls.

Modern games require huge downloads

Although you don’t need high bandwidth for playing online games, bandwidth becomes very important when installing new games. In many cases, even when you buy a physical disc for a game, the disc just contains the bare minimum to start downloading the actual game to your device. That means that you’re almost always going to have to wait before you can start playing a new game.

When Grand Theft Auto V came out back in 2013, it took up almost 90GB of hard drive space. People are speculating that GTA VI could have a file size as large as 200GB. That means that if someone with a 15Mbps connection buys the game on the day it releases, they won’t actually get to play it on release day because downloading the game will take more than 24 hours!

In contrast, someone with a gigabit connection should be able to download the entire game in less than half an hour.

Fortunately, many modern games give the option to pre-install the game on your device before the official release date so that people with slower connections can still play on release day, but faster connections still save you a lot of hassle. Additionally, since games like GTA VI could each take up a third of your hard drive on a PS5, you might have to uninstall and then re-download games on a pretty regular basis.

Spectrum gigabit plans

As previously mentioned, Spectrum has placed a lot of focus on online gaming. Besides taking steps to reduce latency in its network, it has also partnered with organizations like NRG Esports to bring gaming experiences to fans across the country.

Spectrum also has a wide range of gigabit plans that offer both lower latency and higher download speeds than older DSL connections.

Consider Spectrum Gig plans to up your game

Bandwidth and latency have an impact on everything you do online, but you really feel it when it comes to gaming. High bandwidth and low latency translate to the best speeds and the fastest response times, and that makes for a much better gaming experience.

If your online gaming experience is a major factor in choosing your internet provider, you should definitely consider Spectrum when comparing your options. Just remember that it’s not all about the download speed you see in the advertisements. You also have to consider the little differences, like reduced latency that really set some providers apart.
