Compare T-Mobile 5G Home Internet and Mediacom head-to-head
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet services across 50 states, while Mediacom primarily services the Midwest and southern U.S. If both are available in your area, here’s a breakdown of pricing, speeds, and fees so you can decide which plan is best for your internet use.
Mediacom offers both fiber and cable connection types, with fiber easily being the best type of internet you can get. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet only offers 5G and fixed wireless, which are solid options if fiber isn’t available in your area.
While Mediacom is the winner when it comes to speed and starting price, there are quite a few drawbacks (cough, cough…fees) that make T-Mobile tempting. Let’s break it down.

Our favorite plan: Rely Internet
This plan is on 5G technology, which has fairly widespread availability. For speeds up to 354Mbps, you will have plenty for streaming, gaming, and other online activities. See our methodology for more information.
All of T-Mobile 5G Home Internet’s plans are contract-free, so you can cancel at any time. While it would be nice to see a bit more variety in speed options, all its packages have plenty of speed for streaming Disney+ on one TV, HBO Max on another, and your local football game on the family computer at the same time.

Our favorite plan: Internet 300
If you’re able to get a fiber connection on Internet 300, your household is set with plenty of low-latency speed for streaming, remote work, and online gaming. See our methodology for more information.
Mediacom has plenty of options when it comes to speed, and you can get up to 5Gigs if you really want it, though you probably don’t need to. For the low promotional pricing, you can rest easy knowing your rate is well below average for at least a few years. To truly know if you’re getting a deal, though, you’ll need to add up the additional fees that Mediacom charges. In the end, it may put you up to average pricing.

Fees and additional costs are where T-Mobile and Mediacom really start to differ. T-Mobile offers free self-installation that only takes about 15 minutes with the kit you are sent. While you can still opt for the free self-installation at Mediacom, there are activation fees, phone processing fees, and other miscellaneous expenses to be aware of.

Recurring fees: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet vs. Mediacom
| Equipment fee | Other fees | |
|---|---|---|
T-Mobile Home Internet | ||
Mediacom |
The difference in fees is pretty obvious here. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offers free equipment rentals, and you can get a free basic router from Mediacom, but you can also choose to upgrade your equipment for a fee.
Late fees are a basic practice, but Mediacom also hits you with a Wi-Fi Certification fee, insufficient funds charges, and an Internet surcharge that can quickly add up.
Price hikes
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offers a five-year price guarantee. After that, your monthly rate will increase to the standard rate on your current plan, which isn’t too bad of a deal. For Mediacom, your starting price is promotional, meaning that after the first two to five years, you get a steal. After that, your rate will hike up.

Data based on our Annual Internet Service Provider Review.
Customers of both T-Mobile and Mediacom are pretty satisfied with their service. As far as reliability goes, both providers rate highly against competitors, but if you’re looking for high speeds, Mediacom outranks T-Mobile’s home internet with its fiber plans.

Final call: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet vs. Mediacom
This is a tough call, but we’d recommend T-Mobile 5G Home Internet unless you can get Mediacom fiber in your area. The promotional pricing at Mediacom is great, but the heavy installation fees, years-long contracts, and additional costs boost T-Mobile Home Internet to the lead. It is incredibly easy to set up your internet with T-Mobile, and you can rest easy knowing that the price you see is the price you get.

Methodology
Our HighSpeedInternet.com editorial team bases our analyses on customer input from our Annual Internet Service Provider Review, results from our speed test tool, and proprietary internet provider data on speeds and pricing. To strengthen our research, we look closely at provider contracts to get hard-to-find information on price hikes, data caps, and extra fees, and we keep tabs on the latest news reports and online reviews. When applicable, we also rely on our personal experiences testing these services.
Our favorite plan
The average household needs internet speeds of at least 300Mbps but not more than a gig (1,000Mbps), so the best plan we recommend for each provider is always within that range. We also consider plan specifics, like added costs or included perks, and compare all the options from each provider to national averages. Finally, we account for tech type differences, since you might not need as much speed on a fiber plan as you would on a less-reliable fixed wireless or cable plan. Learn more about how much speed you need, and enter your zip code in our provider lookup tool to see what you can get in your neighborhood.
A note about pricing
The prices you see may not reflect the standard rates these providers could charge after an introductory period. You’ll see the standard rates on broadband nutrition labels displayed during checkout, along with equipment fees, installation fees, contract requirements, and data caps (if any). Always view this information before you sign up for internet service.
