Every gamer has to eventually face dreaded server outages that always happen at the worst times. It’s always right after work or school, during precious weekend hours, or on a big game release day that the service decides to nosedive. Thankfully, Xbox Live is really good about keeping you in the know with service status.
We’ll show how to find exactly what’s going on with Xbox Live anytime you’re having issues, and, spoiler alert: the answer isn’t Downdetector. Xbox’s own support app will tell you everything you need to know about Xbox Live’s Status.
Check for an Xbox Live outage
The most reliable way to check for an Xbox Live outage lives right in the console. Microsoft decided to go all in and dedicate an entire app to troubleshooting Xbox issues, including a thorough Xbox Live status tracker.
Not only does the Xbox Status page give you an immediate yes-or-no answer in seconds, it tells you exactly what parts of Xbox Live (games, features, etc) are down.
Here’s how you use and interpret the Xbox Live status tool:
Step 1: From the Xbox homescreen, select the My Games and Apps icon, and select Apps on the left-hand side of the screen.
Step 2: Select the Xbox Support app, usually the last tile in the app drawer.
Step 3: Once in the Xbox Support app, select Xbox Status in the upper-right corner. This page tells you in detail the current status of each service (Games and gaming, Store and subscriptions, etc.) on Xbox Live. View the icon next to each service category to learn the status:
Up and running: The service is fully operational.
Limited: Certain aspects of the service are experiencing issues.
Major Outage: The service is experiencing major issues and may be entirely unavailable.
Unfortunately, if Xbox Live or one of its subservices is experiencing an outage, you’ll have to wait for the problem to be resolved, but Xbox doesn’t leave you in the dark. You can get an estimate of when the service will be back online and more details on the issue at hand. Find out how below.
Find out when Xbox Live will be back online
You can learn when an outage is estimated to be fixed by going further into the Xbox status page.
Step 1: From the Xbox Live status page within the Support app, select the Xbox Live service you want to learn more about.
Step 2: A new page opens that describes the details of the issue or outage.
Step 3: Select the Notify Me button to get a notification when the service is back online.
Step 4: View the Status section to learn the estimated fix time, labeled Resolution. If an ETA on a fix is provided, you’ll find it here. This is also where Xbox displays progress updates and more details on the outage or issue.
Check your internet connection
It’s possible your internet connection is the issue. Xbox Live could be perfectly fine, but loading very slowly or not at all due to an issue with your internet connection, like a provider slowdown or even an outage.
Your best first step is to run a quick speed test. A speed test provides you with a bunch of useful info (like download speed and ping) along with verification that your connection is indeed working.
If you don’t get results at all, you’re either experiencing an internet outage or there’s something wrong with your home network. If you get results but they’re slower than what you’re paying for, check out our tips to improve your connection.

Upgrade your internet plan
Big full-featured platforms like Xbox Live get more demanding every day. Not too long ago, a 100–200Mbps plan was plenty of bandwidth for the average household, but today, the same residence might experience a serious bottleneck with the same speed.
Thankfully, it’s easy to find a better deal on internet service, and customers have more options than ever with new technologies, like 5G home internet. Plug your zip code into the search below and see if there’s a better internet plan in your future.
