San Francisco Residential Internet Coverage

San Francisco is one of the largest cities in California, and as a result, numerous national and local internet companies have extensive networks in this area.

One option to consider is AT&T, which offers DSL and fiber service throughout San Francisco. The DSL network covers all of San Francisco, reaching as far west as Outer Sunset, as far north as North Beach, as far east as Potrero Hill, and as far south as Crocker Amazon. The fiber network is considerably smaller, although it is still in development.

Both Xfinity and Sonic.net bring coverage to almost all of San Francisco, with Sonic.net stopping short of the west coast in Lakeshore.

Through Raw Bandwidth Telecom, a few eastern neighborhoods enjoy access to high-speed internet. This company serves South of Market and Potrero Hill.

The New Edge Networks service area is slightly larger, reaching Lakeshore in the southwest, Bernal Heights and Inner Richmond in central San Francisco, and the northern neighborhood of Marina.

Most areas southeast of the financial district have coverage through Astound Broadband. South of Market and Mission are both in the service area of Race Communications, as well.

Technology Type

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Service has frequent hiccups (out for 5-60 seconds a couple times a day) which can disrupt connections. Price increased from $49.99 to $87.61 (+75%!) without notice.

Service stability is not what it used to be with somewhat more frequent downtimes. Substantial cost increase in part due to mandatory voice service fees, even if we don't use them. Download speed is generally good

Gigabit fiber is always fast (up and down) and low-latency — never the evening slowdowns I used to get with cable. It has very good uptime - has gone down well under once per year. Price is good, and they don't try to upsell you or sell your information to advertisers. What is not to like?

Methodology

HighSpeedInternet.com compares internet providers within cities and metro areas to give customers the most relevant insights into their internet options. When comparing providers, we consider the following:

  • Provider coverage areas
  • Advertised speeds
  • Real-world speeds (speed test data)
  • Customer feedback
  • Other relevant localized data

We source localized coverage data displayed on our coverage maps from the FCC coverage database, which is updated every six months. For the most current summary of providers in your area, we recommend you use our zip code search tool, which offers the most recent coverage data straight from internet service providers (ISPs).

Our city overviews compare advertised provider speeds. We may also include real-world speed data gathered from millions of annual speed test results. To process our speed test data, we first filter out outliers and providers with low test counts. We then calculate speed averages with every ISP subject to the same parameters.

We gather ISP customer feedback data from our comprehensive annual surveys and direct customer feedback submitted to HighSpeedInternet.com. Unless stated otherwise, average ratings are calculated nationally.
