Quantum Fiber speeds: What’s best for you?

Most netizens would be happy with Quantum’s Up to 500 Mbps plan. Upload and download speeds of 500Mbps are perfect for a household of three or four people. You will have plenty of bandwidth to support streaming, gaming, and video calls on multiple devices, all at the same time. Also, $50 a month is a great deal for a fiber plan.

We recommend gig or multi-gig speeds, though, if you have a bigger household. You may also need multi-gig speeds if you handle very large files like raw video, host videoconferences, or livestream gameplay. Even if you have a cable or DSL connection from Quantum Fiber from the curb to your front door, Quantum Fiber is known for speed and reliability. The faster plans ensure you can tackle pretty much anything without a hiccup.

Quantum Fiber’s data caps

You’re in luck—Quantum Fiber has no data caps. That means you can use the internet as much as you like without worrying about overage charges or throttled speeds.

Quantum Fiber internet installation, equipment, and contracts

Installation is free and easy with Quantum Fiber. Your technician will help you set up the 360 WiFi gear and help you decide whether you need to create a mesh wireless system using additional pods.

Quantum Fiber installation and equipment

We recommend the included 360 Wi-Fi system for almost all customers. The mesh system includes up to four 360 Wi-Fi pods that you set up around the house to ensure a consistent connection, and it comes with excellent security features to keep your personal data safe.

Setup is easy. Simply follow the instructions on Quantum’s website and use Quantum’s app to create your network and activate your 360 Wi-Fi pods after you’ve connected them to power. The app is also the best way to troubleshoot connection problems in case any crop up in the future.

If you haven’t had Quantum Fiber at your address before, you may need to schedule a technician to help with the installation. They’ll help you determine  the best spot for your WiFi 360 gateway and determine whether you need additional pods to ensure coverage throughout your home.

Pro tip: Don’t bother with your own router

Using the 360 Wi-Fi gateway from Quantum is easy and free, and it’s the best way to access your Quantum Fiber internet. If you have one of the multi-gig plans, you may even get a new Wi-Fi 7-certified setup.

If you need extra Ethernet ports, check out our expert guide to the Best High-Speed Network Switches of 2024. If Quantum Fiber starts charging a rental fee in the future, you might want to switch to your own gear. Take a look at our Best Wi-Fi routers guide for some great options.

Quantum Fiber internet contracts

There’s no requirement to sign an annual contract when you get Quantum Fiber. You can cancel any time, and you don’t need to pay an early termination fee.

We don’t feature Quantum Fiber in our annual customer satisfaction survey. However, the service gets great reviews on forums such as r/centurylink on Reddit and
Quantum Fiber’s Facebook page.

Customers (especially ones who switched from cable internet providers) gave Quantum a big thumbs-up for its symmetrical speeds and reliable connection. Quantum also gets props for having unlimited data and no contracts. They say it’s hard to use your own router and worry you might have to pay rental fees in the future, since equipment isn’t included in the Price for Life guarantee.

How Quantum Fiber compares to the competition

ProviderPricesSpeedsUser ratingΔ Order online
$50.00–$165.00/mo.*500–8,000MbpsN/A
Xfinity $19.99–$120.00/mo.§75–2,000 Mbps3.7/5.0View Plans
Optimum $30.00–$265.00/mo.‖¶300–8,000Mbps3.3/5.0View Plans
Mediacom $34.99–$54.99/mo.#100–1,000Mbps3.4/5.0View Plans

You get a better deal from Quantum Fiber compared to its main competitors. Xfinity and Mediacom are both cable internet providers. While they give you more plans to choose from—and lower prices on their lowest speed tiers—you end up getting much faster speeds for a similar or lower price from Quantum. You just can’t beat Quantum’s symmetrical speeds.

Quantum also has the edge over Optimum, its main fiber competitor. It’s true that Optimum can get you sweet fiber speeds and low prices—at least for the first year of your service. Unfortunately, after those 12 months, you can expect to see massive price hikes on your Optimum plans. Quantum doesn’t goof around with promo prices, so you get a fair price straightaway.

Is Quantum Fiber internet right for you?

It’s smart to get Quantum Fiber no matter what your internet needs are. You can get a budget plan with fast speeds or multi-gig speeds for a reasonable price—either way, you’ll get better internet with fair terms and more benefits than you would from a cable provider.

FAQ about Quantum Fiber

Is Quantum Fiber the same as CenturyLink?

Quantum Fiber and CenturyLink are under the Lumen Technologies umbrella. They’re different names for basically the same service. Quantum Fiber is the brand for fiber internet, and CenturyLink is the brand for DSL service. You get the same speeds and prices on a Quantum plan as you would from CenturyLink fiber, but your Price for Life guarantee may change if the plan’s name changes.

What are the benefits of Quantum Fiber?

Quantum Fiber’s benefits include symmetrical multi-gig speeds, unlimited data, and no contracts. Also, you get installation and equipment at no extra charge.

Is Quantum Fiber legit?

Yes, Quantum Fiber is totally legit. It’s the same service as CenturyLink, just under a different name. Quantum Fiber gives you fiber-optic speeds of up to a whopping 8 gigs at a reasonable price, and you won’t need to worry about contracts or data caps. Better yet, most households will have plenty of bandwidth with the 500Mbps plan, which rings in at just $50 per month.

Methodology

Our HighSpeedInternet.com editorial team bases our analyses on customer input from our annual customer satisfaction survey, results from our speed test tool, and proprietary internet provider data on speeds and pricing. To strengthen our research, we look closely at provider contracts to get hard-to-find information on price hikes, data caps, and extra fees, and we keep tabs on the latest news reports and online reviews. When applicable, we also rely on our personal experiences testing these services.
