What is the best internet provider in San Jose?

Xfinity and AT&T are the best internet providers in San Jose, CA. Both ISPs offer gigabit speeds in most areas of the city, with Xfinity topping out at 2,000 Mbps and AT&T hitting top speeds of 5,000 Mbps. With AT&T, you might get stuck with slower DSL internet in certain neighborhoods, but most of the city has access to AT&T fiber internet.

The shared downside to AT&T and Xfinity is that both lock you into contracts. Xfinity internet can also be a little pricey, especially for its top speeds. AT&T has better prices for the fastest plans, but its starting prices are higher for basic internet.

What is the fastest internet provider in San Jose?

Sonic is the fastest internet service provider (ISP) in San Jose with fiber internet speeds as high as 10,000 Mbps (10 Gbps), which is incredible but overkill for most households. Other good options for high-speed fiber-optic internet in San Jose are AT&T and EarthLink.

San Jose has great cable internet options as well, like Xfinity. Despite being a cable internet provider, Xfinity performed very well in our fastest internet providers in 2022 analysis, scoring ahead of several fiber ISPs.

Highest-rated internet providers in San Jose

T-Mobile Home Internet is the highest-rated provider in San Jose, according to our annual customer satisfaction survey. T-Mobile’s 5G home internet received higher ratings than any other national ISP, especially when it comes to price satisfaction, where T-Mobile received the highest ratings in the history of our survey. T-Mobile’s pricing is second to none when it comes to simplicity and value; everything’s included for a flat $50 per month.

San Jose’s primary cable ISPs, Xfinity and Spectrum, both received great ratings for internet speed, but Xfinity has the edge with the top speed ratings for the second year in a row.

Many of the internet providers available in San Jose are smaller, regional ISPs and are not represented in our survey. So if you’re looking for great service locally, our tip is to go with a fiber internet service. On average, customers with fiber-optic internet report higher satisfaction with their internet service compared to customers using DSL or cable internet.

EarthLink offers internet at speeds up to 5000 Mbps

Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 2000 Mbps

San Jose residential internet coverage

Unsurprisingly, there are several national and local internet providers present in the San Jose area. Over 97% of Santa Clara county has at least two providers for 100 Mbps internet, compared to less than 50% nationally according to FCC Fixed Broadband Deployment data.

If you’re looking for the fastest internet, both AT&T and Xfinity offer multigigabit speeds to pretty much all of Silicon Valley, but AT&T has better coverage south of San Jose. Sail Internet also offers fast speeds—up to 300 Mbps—from Japantown to Hayes and west into Willow Glen.

I canceled Xfinity a month in advance. I also called the company to remind them not to charge me for the upcoming month. Xfinity is greedy and charged me anyway without providing internet service. It took me one hour to talk to the agent and get a rebate. However, upon getting a rebate, the amount was less than what they charged me. Xfinity is bad.

Methodology

HighSpeedInternet.com compares internet providers within cities and metro areas to give customers the most relevant insights into their internet options. When comparing providers, we consider the following:

  • Provider coverage areas
  • Advertised speeds
  • Real-world speeds (speed test data)
  • Customer feedback
  • Other relevant localized data

We source localized coverage data displayed on our coverage maps from the FCC coverage database, which is updated every six months. For the most current summary of providers in your area, we recommend you use our zip code search tool, which offers the most recent coverage data straight from internet service providers (ISPs).

Our city overviews compare advertised provider speeds. We may also include real-world speed data gathered from millions of annual speed test results. To process our speed test data, we first filter out outliers and providers with low test counts. We then calculate speed averages with every ISP subject to the same parameters.

We gather ISP customer feedback data from our comprehensive annual surveys and direct customer feedback submitted to HighSpeedInternet.com. Unless stated otherwise, average ratings are calculated nationally.
