What is the best internet provider in San Jose?

You’d think that internet providers would be tripping over themselves to provide the best, fastest internet to the tech-savvy residents of San Jose. But there are surprisingly few fiber and fast cable internet options in the city.

Of course, there are still ways to get gigabit speeds throughout San Jose, but the competition is light. Thankfully, that makes it pretty easy to find the best internet providers.

In terms of speed and coverage, Xfinity and AT&T are the best internet providers in the city. Both ISPs offer speeds up to 1,000 Mbps in most areas. With AT&T, you might get stuck with slower DSL internet in certain neighborhoods, but most of the city has access to the faster AT&T fiber network.

The shared downside to AT&T and Xfinity is that both lock you into contracts. Xfinity internet can also be a little pricey, especially for its top speeds. AT&T has better prices for the fastest plans, but its starting prices for basic internet are higher.

Technology Type

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in San Jose

Out of the national Internet Service Providers in San Jose, AT&T is the most highly rated provider. The ISP has generally high ratings for price and billing satisfaction according to three customer satisfaction reports:

Xfinity is ranked toward the middle of the pack in most metrics, but it gets high marks for performance and reliability.

Smaller local providers are not featured in these reports, but the ACSI does report a group labeled “All Others,” which ranks third out of 12. So there are quite a few local providers that could offer a better overall customer experience than giants like AT&T or Xfinity, but most of those in San Jose offer slower top speeds.

AT&T offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps

Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps

Sail Internet offers internet at speeds up to 300 Mbps

Frontier offers internet at speeds up to 115 Mbps

The city of San Jose has a few providers that offer internet speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps), including AT&T and Xfinity. Most people don’t need the fastest internet service. But the extra bandwidth is useful if you’re splitting the connection between several roommates or family members.

Just over 95% of the city has access to 100 Mbps internet. So even if you can’t get gigabit internet (or just don’t want to pay for it), you’ll still get speeds fast enough for HD streaming, gaming, and multiple connections.

San Jose residential internet coverage

Unsurprisingly, there are several national and local internet providers present in the San Jose area. It would be really weird if there weren’t many options in the heart of Silicon Valley. Over 97% of Santa Clara county has at least two providers for 100 Mbps internet, compared to less than 50% nationally according to FCC Fixed Broadband Deployment data.

If you’re looking for the fastest internet, both AT&T and Xfinity offer gigabit speeds to pretty much all of Silicon Valley, but AT&T has better coverage south of San Jose. Sail Internet also offers fast speeds—up to 300 Mbps—from Japantown to Hayes and west into Willow Glen.

If you’re looking for something a little less intense than fiber-optic internet, Sonic provides DSL internet plans with speeds up to 25 Mbps throughout most of San Jose. And Frontier Communications has DSL coverage around the East Foothills, Alum Rock, Evergreen, and Los Gatos.

San Jose internet FAQ

Are there fast internet options in San Jose?

You can definitely find fast internet in San Jose. A few Internet Service Providers—including AT&T and Xfinity—offer speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) in some areas, which is about as fast as residential internet can currently get. Speeds of at least 100 Mbps (the FCC considers a broadband connection to be 25 Mbps and above) are available to about 95% of San Jose residents.

Does DIRECTV offer internet service in San Jose?

DIRECTV doesn’t provide internet services, but you can bundle DIRECTV with your AT&T internet subscription. Of course, you can also get DIRECTV by itself in addition to whatever high-speed internet package you want, but you won’t get bundle discounts that way.

How do AT&T and Xfinity compare in San Jose?

AT&T has both fiber and DSL internet in San Jose, while Xfinity is a cable internet and TV provider. Both offer speeds up to 1,000 Mbps in San Jose, and both require contracts when you sign up.

If you want the fastest speeds, AT&T’s 1,000 Mbps plan costs less than Xfinity’s, and it doesn’t have a data cap. But Xfinity’s slower internet plans (less than 100 Mbps) are cheaper than AT&T’s.

For bundles, AT&T Internet and U-Verse TV Double Play packages give you more channels than Xfinity bundles, but Xfinity has slightly lower prices.

How much does internet service cost in San Jose?

Internet prices in San Jose start at around $30 per month for 15 Mbps (with Xfinity Performance Starter*) and go up to more than a hundred dollars per month for gigabit speeds. It all depends on which providers are available in your area and how much speed you need. But we’d say most people would be happy with AT&T’s Internet 300 plan, which starts at $50 per month for one year.

In general, slower internet speed packages are less expensive than faster speeds from the same company. But the same isn’t true across companies, so it’s a good idea to shop around for the best deal. For example, fixed wireless and satellite internet providers often charge more for slower speeds than cable, DSL, or fiber internet providers do.
