Due to its low cost and high speed, CenturyLink is one of the most popular Internet service providers. While DSL can’t deliver speeds as fast as fiber, CenturyLink still provides plenty of speed for most Internet activities, like browsing social media and online shopping, plus it’s more affordable than cable or fiber.
CenturyLink gets mediocre marks for customer service. CenturyLink fiber-based Internet is only available in 10 cities. Customers in the remaining markets within the CenturyLink footprint may experience issues with the speed limitations of DSL technology.
CenturyLink is the perfect choice for the budget-conscious consumer. It provides enough speed for most Internet activities without charging customers for more speed than they need.

HSI's Assessment of CenturyLink
CenturyLink Internet speeds
CenturyLink is among the fastest DSL providers. CenturyLink offers download speeds up to 40 Mbps and upload speeds up to 5 Mbps. It is among the fastest DSL providers. CenturyLink also offers a fiber-optic based Internet service with speeds up to 1 Gbps, but it is only available residentially in 10 Cities: Columbia, MO, Denver, CO, Jefferson City, MO, Las Vegas, NV, Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, Omaha, NE, Orlando, FL, Portland, OR, Salt Lake City, UT, and Seattle, WA. If you live in one of these cities, you can find out more about CenturyLink gigabit Internet here. Even with the limitations of DSL, most Internet users should find the speeds available from CenturyLink to be adequate for standard Internet usage. Email, social media, shopping, and browsing should be no problem. Customers who stream a lot of videos, or households with more than three users might need a little more speed, but CenturyLink is a fine Internet service provider for most consumers.
CenturyLink Internet Prices
CenturyLink offers Internet packages starting under $20 per month with top-tier packages starting at nearly $30 per month. After the first year, prices can increase to as much as $60 per month. Customers can also expect to pay an installation fee of up to $100, or they can opt to install the service themselves. Sometimes CenturyLink or its sales partners will waive the installation fee as part of a promotional offer. Customers will also have to pay for a router to support a wireless home network. They can either rent one for about $8 per month, or they can purchase the router for a one-time payment of about $100. Most of these fees are comparable with industry standards. Although setting up the service can be a bit pricey, the month-to month costs after installation are affordable for most consumers. With CenturyLink delivering some of the fastest speeds available through DSL technology, it is a good value for consumers who need a reliable Internet connection and don’t want to pay for a bunch of bandwidth they don’t need.
In HSI’s 2015 independent survey, CenturyLink received mediocre marks for customer satisfaction, scoring at about the average in every category. It was rated slightly below average for customer service. Upon further analysis, CenturyLink has received some poor reviews that reflect difficulties resolving billing and service issues due to poor communication with customer service representatives. However, these types of issues are common in the telecommunications industry and are not isolated to CenturyLink. In contrast to the reviews, CenturyLink offers several service options to suit customer needs. It is one of the few Internet service providers that offers both contract and no-contract service options. It has a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee, 24/7 technical support, and CenturyLink @Ease antivirus software available.
