Compare NordVPN and ExpressVPN head-to-head

Which VPN is better, NordVPN or ExpressVPN? For most people, it’s ExpressVPN. Its apps are easier to use, it adds less lag to video calls and gaming, and it costs less to keep once your first contract ends. NordVPN fights back with a much bigger server network and a privacy record that’s held up against real government pressure.

That’s the short version. We used both as our everyday VPN for two weeks each, and the longer version will help you decide which is best for you.

Overall, ExpressVPN edges out NordVPN 79/100 to 77/100. That’s close, but the gap shows up in the places you’ll notice every day. For the deep dives, check out our NordVPN review and ExpressVPN review. For the head-to-head, here’s how these two premium VPNs compare.

Pricing: Close up front, but ExpressVPN is cheaper to keep

Neither provider has a free plan, and the month-to-month subscription for the Basic plan is a bit spendy from either. The real difference shows up at renewal.

ExpressVPN and NordVPN both offer extended subscriptions for a lower monthly cost, but ExpressVPN’s is cheaper. Both apply a price hike at the end of your initial contract, but NordVPN’s is significantly higher, and the gap only widens on the top-tier plans.

Nord’s billing page showed a proposed 37% increase for when our two-year contract renews. ExpressVPN’s invoice showed our Pro plan renewing at almost double the intro price, and that renewal rate didn’t show up in our account at all. Set a calendar reminder either way.

  • Speed and performance: ExpressVPN feels faster

On paper, NordVPN held onto slightly more of our bandwidth. In practice, ExpressVPN was the one we forgot was running. We took Zoom calls all day on ExpressVPN without lag or freezing, while Nord gave us shifting audio delays in work meetings. The culprit is latency and jitter, where Nord took a much bigger hit.

    Local server resultNordVPNExpressVPNWinner
    Download speed890Mbps (-5.3%)847Mbps (-9.9%)NordVPN
    Upload speed909Mbps (-4.1%)864Mbps (-8.9%)NordVPN
    Latency110.94 ms (+332%)65.79 ms (+156%)ExpressVPN
    Jitter33.92 ms (+910%)14.96 ms (+345%)ExpressVPN

A quick note on distant servers: On a server in Hong Kong, results were mixed. Nord kept more download speed, Express kept more upload speed, and latency was nearly identical. Use a server closer to your location for best results.

What does that mean for you? If you mostly stream and browse, you won’t feel a difference. If you game or live on video calls, ExpressVPN is the better pick. It even shows each server’s latency and recommends the fastest three, so finding a low-lag connection takes one click.

Features: Nord builds a security suite; ExpressVPN piles on privacy perks

NordVPN and ExpressVPN overlap a lot, which is what you’d expect from two of the biggest names in the business. Both cover the essentials on every plan: post-quantum encryption, a kill switch, split tunneling, ad and malicious site blocking, and help getting around age-verification and regional blocks. Upgrade, and both add a password manager and identity theft insurance.

Where they split is the extras. NordVPN builds toward an all-in-one security suite, with antivirus, secure cloud storage, and credit monitoring on its higher tiers. ExpressVPN leans into privacy perks you’ll actually use day-to-day, like a private email relay on every plan, a 3GB travel eSIM, and ExpressAI, a private AI chat tool with disappearing messages. Express Pro also throws in a dedicated IP address, which Nord only sells as an add-on.

Honestly, none of these extras will change how the VPN itself works for you. Pick the bundle you’d really use. Want antivirus and cloud storage? Go Nord. Need to cover up to 14 devices or want a dedicated IP at no extra cost? Go Express.

Security and privacy: ExpressVPN on paper, NordVPN under pressure

Let’s be clear: Both are safe. Each uses AES-256 encryption, runs RAM-only servers that can’t store your data long-term, and has a no-logs policy verified by third-party audits.

ExpressVPN earned a perfect security score from us. It adds ChaCha20 encryption, benefits from the British Virgin Islands’ strong privacy laws, and has never had a privacy or security breach. The one asterisk: Kape Technologies bought ExpressVPN in 2021, and Kape’s past issues with ad and malware distribution raised some eyebrows at the time.

NordVPN has something you can’t put on a spec sheet. It’s passed third-party audits for 14 years, and it has walked away from entire countries rather than compromise. In 2019, it shut down its Russian servers instead of following a government blocklist. In 2022, it did the same in India rather than store user data for five years. If a proven backbone matters most to you, that record is hard to beat.

Apps: ExpressVPN is easier to use

This is ExpressVPN’s biggest win. You hit one power button to connect, see live latency for every server, and get a plain-English explanation of each protocol before you pick one. You can even set rules so the VPN connects on its own whenever you join a new network. On a Mac, a green checkmark in the toolbar tells you you’re protected at a glance.

NordVPN’s apps are stable, but frequent upsells crowd the screen, and the features you actually need, like split tunneling and protocol settings, are buried in the settings menu. Nord does have the bigger network, with more than 9,400 servers to ExpressVPN’s 3,000-plus, so you’ll never run short of options.

Billing and cancellation: ExpressVPN makes it painless

Both providers offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and both paid up. The difference was how much work it took to get there. ExpressVPN let us request a refund right from our online account without ever talking to support. NordVPN made us chat with support, verify our identity, and then wait on a live agent to fix a missing refund button. It worked out, but you shouldn’t need a fix just to cancel. Here’s how the two compare.

Pro tip: Buy ExpressVPN directly from its website. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play don’t qualify for its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Final verdict for NordVPN vs. ExpressVPN: ExpressVPN wins!

ExpressVPN takes it, 79/100 to 77/100. It’s close on paper, but Express wins five of seven categories, including the ones you’ll feel every day: speed, apps, and billing. NordVPN is still the right pick if you want the biggest server network, an antivirus and cloud storage bundle, or a privacy record that’s been tested under real pressure.
