What is the best internet provider in NYC?

You aren’t going to be disappointed if you’re looking for great internet in New York City. This is the most populous city in the United States, and crammed within its densely-packed grid are multiple internet providers offering a range of services including fast fiber setups,  capable cable plans, and newfangled 5G home connections.

Verizon is the best internet provider in New York

Hands down, you can’t beat Verizon when it comes to internet in the five boroughs. Available across most of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and many parts of the outer boroughs, Verizon’s Fios service delivers one of the fastest internet connections in the United States. The slowest plans start at 300 Mbps, which is still a great speed for small households, and Verizon’s reasonable prices and extra perks (including unlimited data, no equipment fees, and regular promos) make its deals that much sweeter.

Second place goes to Spectrum

Spectrum doesn’t have the impressive speeds of Verizon—Spectrum’s cable connection can’t deliver symmetrical upload speeds, for example. But Spectrum is still an excellent pick if you need a fast and reliable connection for a decent price. The provider’s cable plans reach speeds up to 1,000 Mbps, and prices start at around $50 per month. And like Verizon, Spectrum has no data caps or annual contracts, so you get a straight deal and can cancel any time without paying extra fees.

Want to save money? Astound Broadband and Starry Internet have the best budget options

If you’re looking for a plan that costs you under $50 a month, Astound Broadband is the way to go. Its starting plan delivers speeds of 250 Mbps and works over a cable connection, so you get consistent speeds. Astound plans have no data caps and no contracts, and the provider routinely offers a wide array of promotions to benefit new customers. Before you sign up, make sure to consult our Best Internet Deals page to get coupon codes that waive installation costs and more.

Starry Internet is another great cost-saving option. Available mostly in apartment buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and other boroughs, this smaller provider delivers internet over a fixed wireless connection, meaning it uses wireless radio waves instead of buried cable lines. That makes the connection a little less stable, but with speeds of up to 200 Mbps, you still have enough bandwidth to comfortably support a small- to medium-sized household.

What is the fastest internet provider in New York City?

Verizon is the fastest internet provider available in New York City. Its fiber-optic internet plans offer download speeds up to 2,048 Mbps, although it’s more common to find Verizon Fios plans with 940 Mbps downloads and 880 Mbps uploads.

Verizon took the lead out of all the New York providers in our fastest internet providers report. Its fiber network is incredibly reliable, and its plans can deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds—which isn’t possible with cable providers.

Spectrum, Optimum, and Astound Broadband also deliver gigabit download speeds. Spectrum’s plans top out at 1,000 Mbps while Astound’s and Optimum’s hit downloads up to 940 Mbps. These providers aren’t as fast as Verizon on our speed test, but they still deliver excellent service.

Most households need at least 25 Mbps of download speed and 3 Mbps of upload speed. While most common internet activities can work with fairly slow speeds, your network easily gets bogged down if you have multiple devices using the internet at the same time. That’s especially true if you have multiple people working from home or learning remotely.

If you don’t know what speed you need, you can test your current internet speed to give yourself a reference point and take it from there.

What is the cheapest internet provider in New York City?

Optimum and Astound Broadband are the cheapest internet providers in New York City. Both providers offer plans for just $29.99 a month—an awesome deal considering the speeds you get on either plan.

Starry Internet, Verizon, and Spectrum also have solid internet plans at cheap prices. We recommend going for Optimum or Verizon if either has fiber internet in your area, but all these providers can get you reliable performance even on the cheapest internet plans.

This is one of the worse and more expensive Internet Services I ever had. Slow and unreliable. We have outages every single time it rains or snow. We are forced to use since that's the only provider in our building. That's why they DO NOTHING about it. They keep charging regardless of the outages. Horrible service.

Spectrum is way too expensive for this poor too many outage issues service. They either need to price per month rate down or better fix outage issues. It’s happening way too often.
