We turn to our phones first for almost everything these days, from banking and shopping to checking Slack for work. All that time on a pocket computer with a six-inch screen can make it feel like mobile is more important than home internet.

The truth? Your phone might as well be a Wi-Fi device with a phone number. Wi-Fi now carries somewhere between 82% and 89% of all smartphone data traffic in the U.S.—and those numbers are remarkably consistent no matter which carrier you choose.

Whatever you love doing on your phone, you’re probably doing it on Wi-Fi rather than a cellular network.

Internet providers used to lock you in with contracts and early termination fees. That’s mostly gone now. In its place, multi-year price locks have taken over. Xfinity now offers a five-year price guarantee, Spectrum locks prices for up to three years if you bundle, and Verizon locks in a rate for three to five years, depending on the plan. Annual contracts are dead, but you lose your locked-in rate if you leave.

Mobile works differently. Switching carriers is fast and low friction as long as you aren’t paying for your new phone on an installment plan. Even if you are, you can usually get your new carrier to pay off a portion of the old phone. From there, porting your number takes a few hours, max, and eSIM activation can take just minutes.

That asymmetry shows up in the numbers. Industry wide, broadband churn sits at just 1.25% a month, according to S&P Global data from Q3 2025.

It’s a lot easier to cancel internet service than it used to be, but you still need to handle equipment returns and autopay nonsense, and you may be without Wi-Fi for a while.

Reason 4: Mobile service is similar in most areas

If your birth year starts with a 19 and you can remember back to the early days of cell service, choosing the right carrier was a big deal. If you chose wrong, you’d spend all day trying to find bars or apologizing for dropped calls.

Skip ahead to 2026, and there are only three big networks out there: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Nearly every other carrier you’ve heard of, think Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Mint Mobile, Cricket, Visible, or Boost, actually runs on one of those same three networks. In most parts of the country, day-to-day network performance is close enough that the differences won’t show up in your calls, texts, or streaming.

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Study backs this up with real numbers. The study measures “problems per 100 uses,” a score that tracks how often something goes wrong, like a dropped call or a slow connection. Across most regions, carriers scored within a point or two of each other. T-Mobile and Verizon tied at 9 problems per 100 uses in the Northeast and the West, and tied again at 8 in the Mid-Atlantic. In other words, network quality has converged across the Big Three.

OpenSignal’s 2026 data tells the same story from a different angle. No single carrier wins across the board. T-Mobile leads on reliability and consistency. Verizon leads on coverage and 5G streaming experience. AT&T’s strongest showing was staying connected, with the highest time on network of the three.

None of this means every carrier is identical everywhere. There can be real coverage issues in rural areas or, conversely, in densely packed cities where towers are congested and cell signal has to find its way around walls of thick glass and concrete. But for most people in most places, the network itself isn’t what should decide your mobile provider.

Price, perks, and how well a plan fits your household are much better places to focus.

Reason 5: Picking internet first gives you endless mobile freedom

Everyone shares the Wi-Fi in a typical home, but each person has their own mobile phone. If you start with a great internet provider, you have flexibility to make phone plan choices for each person individually.
