Which internet providers in Philadelphia are the cheapest?

Astound Broadband appears to be the cheapest internet provider in Philadelphia, offering a 300 Mbps cable internet plan for just $14.99 per month. That’s downright cheap in our book—until the price increases to a surprising $149.99 per month after the first 12 months. Verizon Home Internet and Xfinity do not raise prices, so they’re cheaper than Astound for the long term.

If you compare gigabit plans, Verizon has the best deal. You pay $89.99 monthly for a 940 Mbps fiber plan with symmetrical speeds and no data caps, and the price never increases. Xfinity’s faster 1,200 Mbps cable internet is similar in price as Verizon at $80.00 per month, but unlimited data costs extra.

Which internet providers in Philadelphia are the fastest?

Xfinity is the fastest in the area with fiber and cable. If you can get fiber, Xfinity’s sole fiber plan reaches up to 6,000 Mbps in symmetrical speeds, but it’s expensive, costing a hefty $299.95 per month and not widely available. Verizon Home Internet has the second-fastest fiber plan in the city with speeds up to 2,000 Mbps, and the cost is only $119.99 per month. Of the two, Xfinity gives you more Mbps per dollar until you factor in the added cost of unlimited data.

Xfinity’s fastest cable internet plan reaches up to 1,200 Mbps for $80.00 per month—the 1,000 Mbps plan is $70.00 per month. By comparison, Verizon’s gigabit plan with unlimited data sets you back $89.99 per month, while Astound’s gigabit plan seems like a steal at $34.99 per month until the price increases to $159.99 after the first 12 months.

Philadelphia residential internet coverage

There are hundreds of neighborhoods in Philadelphia, but almost all have the same internet providers.

Verizon Home Internet offers fiber internet in most of Philadelphia, including Center City, West Philly, South Philly, North Philly, Northwest Philly, and Northeast Philly. Speeds range from up to 200 Mbps to 940 Mbps, depending on where you live. Verizon also provides DSL internet service but to existing customers only.

Xfinity is a cable internet provider covering most of Philadelphia. It’s fastest plan reaches 1,200 Mbps, but Xfinity’s cable service doesn’t have the equal upload and download speeds like Verizon’s fiber internet.

Astound Broadband is another big-name cable internet provider in Philadelphia. Plans range in speed from 10 Mbps to 940 Mbps, depending on where you live.

There are a few smaller providers sprinkled in various neighborhoods that offer broadband internet service, like PhillyWhisper and River Valley Internet. They sometimes offer better deals and usually provide better customer service.

Satellite internet providers like HughesNet and Viasat are also available, but you should avoid them unless satellite is your only option. Satellite internet is slower and more expensive than fiber, DSL, or cable internet.

Highest-rated internet service providers in Philadelphia

Verizon Home Internet has the highest rank in overall satisfaction based on our annual customer satisfaction survey. It tops Xfinity and Astound Broadband, both of which are mainly cable internet providers in the Philadelphia area.

Of the three, Xfinity has the highest ranking in speed satisfaction, which is surprising given Xfinity has cable internet and Verizon Home Internet has fiber. On the flip side, Verizon Home Internet has the highest reliability score because fiber fails far less than cable internet.

Astound Broadband ranks in the bottom half of every category in our survey, but customers appear happy with the speeds they get. Around 89% of the respondents said their speeds “always” or “usually” met their needs. Around 84% of the respondents also said help was “extremely” or “very” easy to get.

Garbage all around: - Doesn't provide the speed they advertise, then blames the customer - Tries to charge $200 for no reason while the customer figures out all of the issues with the internet - Allows DDoS attacks on customer's modem without any cybersecurity whatsoever. - Waste your time on hold whenever you call because your internet doesn't work. Conclusion: Get Fios.

The worst company in America, so toxic they had to change the name. Philly hates them. The customer service is so bad I actually have to sit in silence to gather myself before I call, because I know it will be such a trainwreck of an experience.
