What is the best internet provider in Philadelphia?

Since Philadelphia is the global headquarters of Comcast, it’s no surprise that Xfinity by Comcast has built a strong network here. Nearly all Philly residents can get Xfinity internet.

Verizon is the other big player in the area. Verizon’s fiber network covers most of Philadelphia, offering speeds up to 940 Mbps.

In addition to Verizon and Xfinity, there are a few smaller providers sprinkled in various Philly neighborhoods that offer broadband internet service. Some of these local internet providers include TOAST.net, Hotwire Communications, North Coast Wireless Communications, and Mechcom Dot Net. If any of these options are available in your area, check them out. They sometimes offer a better deal and usually provide better customer service.

While satellite internet providers like HughesNet and Viasat are also available in Philadelphia, we wouldn’t recommend satellite to people living in the city with other options. Satellite internet is slower and more expensive than fiber, DSL, or cable internet.

Summary of Philadelphia internet providers

Verizon DSL & Fiber 940 Mbps 3.5/5
Viasat Satellite 25 Mbps 1.5/5
HughesNet Satellite 25 Mbps 2.0/5

Technology Type

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in Philadelphia

If you’re in Philly looking for internet service, it’ll probably come down to either Verizon or Xfinity. Both of these providers are available to almost all Philly residents, and both rank pretty high in our 2020 customer satisfaction survey.

EarthLink, which is also available in Philadelphia, takes the top spot in our survey, but Verizon is a close second. Xfinity comes in fifth place overall, but it’s the highest-ranked ISP for customer satisfaction in the internet speed category (closely followed by Verizon and Earthlink).

Fastest internet service providers in Philadelphia

Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps

Verizon offers internet at speeds up to 940 Mbps

EarthLink offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps

Viasat offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps

Verizon and Xfinity by Comcast offer internet service in most of Philly, including gigabit service, although the fastest speed will vary depending on your neighborhood. So, which internet service is better?

Technically, Xfinity’s gigabit plan offers slightly faster upload speeds (up to 1,000 Mbps) than Verizon Fios (up to 940 Mbps). But Xfinity delivers internet through a cable network, while Verizon Fios relies on a fiber-optic network, which is much better. Why? A fiber network allows for faster upload speeds than a cable one.

Verizon’s gigabit plan offers superfast upload speeds that go up to 880 Mbps, while Xfinity’s gigabit plan has upload speeds around 35 Mbps. That means that for internet activities like gaming, uploading videos to YouTube, or sending large files, you will get better performance with Verizon Fios.

If you use the internet mostly to stream video content, shop, or browse, then Xfinity’s plan will be great for you since you’re not uploading much content.

Philadelphia residential internet coverage

There are hundreds of neighborhoods in Philadelphia, but almost all have the same internet providers. Xfinity by Comcast and Verizon are available almost everywhere in Philly, including Center City, West Philly, South Philly, North Philly, Northwest Philly, and Northeast Philly. Verizon Fios fiber internet is only available in half the city, which means that part of the city has slower Verizon DSL speeds.

Most Philly neighborhoods have a variety of Xfinity plans to choose from, with speeds maxing out at 1,000 Mbps.

Verizon speeds are spottier throughout Philadelphia. Some parts of the city have Verizon internet speeds that only go up to 15 Mbps, while other areas have speeds up to 940 Mbps.

Philly residents can also check out local internet providers like TOAST.net, Hotwire Communications, North Coast Wireless Communications, and Mechcom Dot Net. Although these providers aren’t rated nationally, they can deliver a good value and better customer service than some of the big name internet companies.

The worst company in America, so toxic they had to change the name. Philly hates them. The customer service is so bad I actually have to sit in silence to gather myself before I call, because I know it will be such a trainwreck of an experience.

Their wireless wifi units worked only half the time, literally not working 2 weeks of the month. And still charging a full bill each time without any compromise for resolution or compensation. At&t is the WORST!
