What is the best internet provider in Philadelphia?

Xfinity is a subsidiary of Comcast, a multi-industry company headquartered in Philadelphia. Nearly all residents can get Xfinity internet.

Verizon is the other big player in the area. Verizon’s fiber network covers most of Philadelphia, offering speeds up to 940 Mbps.

There are a few smaller providers sprinkled in various neighborhoods that offer broadband internet service. These providers include TOAST.net, Hotwire Communications, North Coast Wireless Communications, and Mechcom Dot Net. They sometimes offer better deals and usually provide better customer service.

Satellite internet providers like HughesNet and Viasat are also available, but you should avoid them unless satellite is your only option. Satellite internet is slower and more expensive than fiber, DSL, or cable internet.

Summary of Philadelphia internet providers

Provider Type Download speeds up to User Rating
Xfinity Cable 1000 Mbps 3.0/5
Verizon DSL & Fiber 940 Mbps 3.5/5

Technology Type

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in Philadelphia

If you’re looking for internet service, your choices are mostly Verizon or Xfinity. Both of these providers are available to almost all residents, although Verizon ranked far better than Xfinity in our annual customer satisfaction survey.

Xfinity didn’t rank so well in overall satisfaction, placing 11th out of 12 providers, while Verizon landed in third place. In fact, Xfinity ranked in the bottom half of our lists for speed, price, reliability, and customer service in 2021. Verizon did far better, taking the second (speed, price, reliability) and third (customer service) seats in our latest survey.

Fastest internet service providers in Philadelphia

Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps

Verizon offers internet at speeds up to 940 Mbps

Viasat offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps

HughesNet offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps

Verizon and Xfinity offer internet service in most of Philadelphia, including gigabit service, although the fastest speed will vary depending on your neighborhood. So, which internet service is better?

Xfinity’s Gigabit plan reaches up to 1,200 Mbps using fiber. Its fastest cable internet plan has speeds up to 800 Mbps, but it doesn’t have equal upload and download speeds like fiber internet.

Verizon also provides fiber internet, but its fastest plan is slower than Xfinity with speeds up to 940 Mbps. Xfinity is the clear speed champion in Philadelphia and complements its limited fiber availability with cable internet if fiber isn’t available in your part of town.

If you don’t need a lot of speed, Xfinity’s slower cable internet plans or Verizon’s DSL service are good options.

Philadelphia residential internet coverage

There are hundreds of neighborhoods in Philadelphia, but almost all have the same internet providers.

Xfinity and Verizon are available almost everywhere in Philadelphia, including Center City, West Philly, South Philly, North Philly, Northwest Philly, and Northeast Philly.

Verizon Fios fiber internet is only available in half the city, which means that part of the city has slower Verizon DSL speeds.

Most neighborhoods have a variety of Xfinity plans to choose from, with speeds maxing out at 1,200 Mbps.

Verizon speeds are spottier throughout Philadelphia. Some parts of the city have Verizon internet speeds that only go up to 15 Mbps, while other areas have speeds up to 940 Mbps.

Residents also have access to local internet providers like TOAST.net, Hotwire Communications, North Coast Wireless Communications, and Mechcom Dot Net. Although these providers aren’t rated nationally, they can deliver a good value and better customer service than some of the big-name internet companies.

The worst company in America, so toxic they had to change the name. Philly hates them. The customer service is so bad I actually have to sit in silence to gather myself before I call, because I know it will be such a trainwreck of an experience.

Their wireless wifi units worked only half the time, literally not working 2 weeks of the month. And still charging a full bill each time without any compromise for resolution or compensation. At&t is the WORST!
