Highest-rated internet providers in Philadelphia
If you’re in Philly looking for internet service, it’ll probably come down to either Verizon or Xfinity. Both of these providers are available to almost all Philly residents, and both do well in national internet surveys.
J.D. Power ranked Verizon as the top internet provider in the eastern US, with Comcast coming in second place. Our best internet providers survey also gives Xfinity high marks, ranking it higher than average in customer satisfaction and speed.
Fastest internet service providers in Philadelphia
Xfinity offers internet at speeds up to 1000 Mbps
Verizon offers internet at speeds up to 940 Mbps
Viasat offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps
HughesNet offers internet at speeds up to 25 Mbps
Verizon and Xfinity by Comcast offer internet service in most of Philly, including gigabit service, although the fastest speed will vary depending on your neighborhood. So, which internet service is better?
Technically, Xfinity’s gigabit plan offers slightly faster upload speeds (up to 1,000 Mbps) than Verizon Fios (up to 940 Mbps). But Xfinity delivers internet through a cable network, while Verizon Fios relies on a fiber-optic network, which is much better. Why? A fiber network allows for faster upload speeds than a cable one.
Verizon’s gigabit plan offers superfast upload speeds that go up to 880 Mbps, while Xfinity’s gigabit plan has upload speeds around 35 Mbps. That means that for internet activities like gaming, uploading videos to YouTube, or sending large files, you will get better performance with Verizon Fios.
If you use the internet mostly to stream video content, shop, or browse, then Xfinity’s plan will be great for you since you’re not uploading much content.
