Metronet internet fees

Metronet goes light on the extra fees—with one exception. You don’t have to pay for equipment or installation, and you can avoid the $4.95 monthly paper billing fee by signing up for autopay. You also don’t have to worry about overage fees for data or early termination fees for when you cancel your service.

Metronet’s Tech Assure fee is unorthodox, but not a dealbreaker

Although Metronet waives the most common extra fees, you do have to pay a monthly Tech Assure fee, which tacks an extra $12 onto your bill to cover service calls and technical repairs.

This fee adds a not-small sum to your annual bill, which is never fun. The upside is that it covers any technical installations or repairs you may need, including more complicated undertakings like replacing the fiber-optic wiring in your home or installing an optical network terminal. If anything is broken, you can contact customer service by phone or through Metronet’s website, and you don’t have to pay any additional fees for these services.

Do you need Whole Home Wi-Fi?

Most internet users don’t need Metronet’s Whole Home Wi-Fi service, but you can benefit from it if you want to extend your Wi-Fi range to cover parts of your home that normally don’t pick up the signal.

Whole Home Wi-Fi uses an Eero mesh router system to distribute your Wi-Fi signal across a much wider area than a standard router. That makes it particularly useful for big homes and dwellings with complex layouts, where you’re more likely to encounter dead spots where you can’t get Wi-Fi. The Eero system also makes it easy to extend your Wi-Fi to places like a backyard or pool house, which a standard router might not reach.

Metronet internet customer ratings

While Metronet isn’t featured in our customer satisfaction survey, it does perform excellently in our Fastest Internet Providers report. Metronet regularly makes the top five list for fastest internet providers, and it takes fourth place for speed in our latest edition (published February 2023).

The report is based on data from our speed test, so it relies on real tested speeds rather than advertised ones. And according to our data, Metronet consistently delivers faster speeds than much bigger fiber and cable rivals, including AT&T, CenturyLink, and Spectrum.

Metronet also performed moderately well with the Better Business Bureau. Although the provider got a seemingly not great customer score of 1.32 out of 5, it still gets an A+ rating and (again) takes a better score than most of its bigger competitors.

Metronet vs. AT&T

Metronet and AT&T both have unique strengths in fiber firepower. AT&T’s fiber offerings include a wider range of speed tiers, and its bottom-tier plan costs just $5 more per month than Metronet’s while delivering much faster speeds (300Mbps compared to Metronet’s 100Mbps).

However, AT&T doesn’t get the high-ranking results that Metronet does on our speed test, and Metronet’s gigabit plan costs $20 less per month during the first 24 months than AT&T’s similar offering. AT&T’s DSL plans are also no match for Metronet’s fiber. Neither provider imposes data caps on fiber plans, so honestly you’ll be happy either way.

Metronet vs. Spectrum

Spectrum Internet is fast and reliable, and the cable internet provider gets above average ratings in our customer satisfaction survey. Its baseline plan costs less than Metronet’s and gives you much faster download speeds. And like Metronet, Spectrum skips contracts or data caps.

But if you really have to choose between the two, we recommend sticking with Metronet. A cable provider like Spectrum simply can’t beat the symmetrical speeds of Metronet’s fiber network, and Metronet’s upper-tier plans give you faster performance for an equal or lower price.

Metronet vs. Frontier

Frontier wins the award for fastest advertised speeds here—even the baseline plan zooms along at a more-than-breezy 500Mbps. But there’s a noticeable difference (sometimes quite a big one) between advertised download speeds and the actual tested speeds you get on a daily basis, and Metronet beats out Frontier in our Fastest Internet Providers report.

You can also get DSL internet from Frontier, but it’s a lot slower and still costs the same as Metronet’s baseline fiber plan. Long story short, Metronet wins in this grudge match.

Is Metronet internet right for you?

Metronet is definitely the right internet for you—especially if you value fast speeds and honest deals. Its plans are affordable, and its upper-tier options deliver superb speeds at surprisingly competitive prices. We wish Metronet’s cheapest plan was a little bit cheaper, and we’re side-eyeing the $12 monthly Tech Assure fee a little bit. But all in all, this is a very solid internet provider with lots to offer.
